Unspooled: How the Cassette Made Music Shareable, Duke University Press, 2024.
Well into the new millennium, the analog cassette tape continues to claw its way back from obsolescence. New cassette labels emerge from hipster enclaves while the cassette’s likeness pops up on T-shirts, coffee mugs, belt buckles, and cell phone cases. In Unspooled, Rob Drew traces how a lowly, hissy format that began life in office dictation machines and cheap portable players came to be regarded as a token of intimate expression through music and a source of cultural capital. Drawing on sources ranging from obscure music zines to transcripts of Congressional hearings, Drew examines a moment in the early 1980s when music industry representatives argued that the cassette encouraged piracy. At the same time, 1980s indie rock culture used the cassette as a symbol to define itself as an outsider community. Indie’s love affair with the cassette culminated in the mixtape, which advanced indie’s image as a gift economy. By telling the cassette’s long and winding history, Drew demonstrates that sharing cassettes became an acceptable and meaningful mode of communication that initiated rituals of independent music recording, re-recording, and gifting.

Outreach
Classroom visits
2024: Visited over 100 first graders at Westdale Elementary school to offer hands-on experience on insect biology. Oversee and trained a group of three undergraduates to showcase insect species.
2023, 2024: Organized Insect-a-palooza, a yearly community engagement event supported by the College of Science, Engineering, and Technology and the Biology Department. Led a student team in managing logistics, promotions, and on-site activities. The event attracted nearly 500 attendees and was featured in SVSU media for fostering public interest in insect biology.
Grants
Secured $78,000 in grants to mentor six undergraduate researchers.
Undergraduate student activities and research support
In December 2024, my students presented both a poster and a research talk at the National Entomology Conference, earning second place for best poster in our section—just behind Texas A&M.
In the last two years, my students and I have also established a well-known outreach event, Insect-a-Palooza, which attracts approximately 500 attendees during its three-hour program.
We also launched a school visit initiative where we teach entomology to local first graders, impacting approximately 100 children each year.

Roe, Elizabeth, (2024) Practical strategies for care of individuals impacted by suicide in the emergency department: A narrative review, International Emergency Nursing 74, 101444.
Introduction Suicide is among the leading causes of death and nurses care for survivors of suicide at many points in their grief journey. Every individual who dies by suicide leaves behind multiple affected survivors and how they are cared for immediately following the suicide influences how they cope with the death. The purpose of this article is to make recommendations for the care of survivors of suicide loss in the emergency department. Methods: A narrative review of the current literature was conducted using the databases CINAHL and ProQuest. Articles focused on survivors of suicide loss and their care in the immediate period after the death were utilized. Results: Four hundred and twenty-nine articles were found. Applying established inclusion and exclusion criteria and quality assessment using the SANSA guideline, 29 were included in the review. Discussion: Three themes were identified: 1. Risks for suicide in survivors of suicide loss; 2. Interventions in the immediate period after suicide loss; and 3. Active suicide postvention as suicide prevention. Emergency department nurses need to have the ability to readily assess and recognize the survivors of suicide loss who are at higher risk for complicated grieving and providing rapid and immediate services and resources will help promote coping and positive mental health outcomes in survivors. Keywords: suicide; survivors of suicide loss; suicide prevention; suicide postvention; death notification; grief
