Artist Statement
“Growing up, I had a small stuffed raccoon that my dad brought to life through imagination and storytelling. When I began art school, I knew that little raccoon would eventually become part of my work. During my senior year, when it came time to choose a focus for my BFA project, I decided to center it around him. I created a children’s book to share the same sense of wonder and magic that my stuffed animal gave me as a child. I hope The Adventures of Sniffers the Raccoon sparks imagination, exploration and curiosity in the children who read it.
The Art Department at SVSU has been an incredible source of support throughout this journey. Entering the program, I was nervous about creating a children’s book because I had no prior experience in that area. However, through the guidance, encouragement and feedback of the faculty, I was able to create work that I am truly proud of. Having the opportunity to collaborate with such creative minds has been both an honor and a challenge, and through the process I have learned so much about myself and my artwork. I cannot thank my committee and the Art Department enough for their support throughout this adventure.”
After graduation, I will be working a part-time job over the summer while continuing to develop The Adventures of Sniffers series. I plan to publish the first book and hopefully continue the series with additional titles. In August, I will be moving to Florida to accept a position with The Walt Disney Company. While there, I hope to build connections and work toward a full-time graphic design role. Ultimately, I would like to return to Michigan and pursue a career as an in-house graphic designer.
