JANE REITER: EBULLIENT; Continued

Small Treasures, detail

February 12 - March 12, 2024
Lecture: February 22, 2024, 3 p.m.
Reception: February 22, 2024, 4 - 6 p.m.

Reiter began Ebullient as a solo art exhibition in November, 2021, at the Mott Community College in Flint.  As a body of work, Ebullient still stands full of optimism, perseverance, creative energy and enthusiasm.  In January, 2023, she suffered a devastating personal loss and art making embodies, for her, carrying on due to loss. Ebullient currently, in 2024, continues to focus on moving forward in growth and colorful resilience.  She offers up confidence and hope that in spite of our great losses, selective joys exist in our lives, if we carefully discern their nuances.

Reiter makes art using mixed media collage with paper, fabric, fiber, beads, ephemera and more.  The collages often incorporate recycled and repurposed materials to give them a new life.  As a librarian, she enjoys utilizing bits and pieces of books and magazines into her collages. Drawing and stitching (by hand and machine) bring additional tactile details to the work.  As a visual artist, she always searches for that deep joy and satisfaction of completing a successful piece.  The creative challenge for her is to discover dynamic mixtures of contrasting elements, providing unexpected visual surprises.

The viewer can enjoy the colorful layers of pattern, texture and shape in her work.  The raw and rough edges convey spontaneity and an exuberant process.  Lastly, the art suggests stories, memories or personal associations to each individual viewer.

For Jane Reiter, art is provocative, mind boggling, limitless, fun and life saving.  Welcome to her version of the universe.

October 7 – November 8, 2024
Reception: October 31st, 4 – 6 p.m.

The ceramics program at SVSU within the Department of Art has graduated many artists that have continued the practice of working with clay as their main artistic medium. For this homecoming season BFA majors concentrating in Ceramics have been invited back to revisit their roots, reconnect, and foster new clay connections. As the field has changed, they have grown and found additional mentor-ships outside of the university. They’ve come home to share what they’ve learned. This exhibition will showcase how they’ve grown and developed their working practices since earning their degrees.

Featured artists include: Kassie Smith '13, Robert Rokita '96, Emily Davis '23, Billy Haboush '18, Adam Stuart '15, Penny Knapp '02, Sean Gallagher '97, Kari Young '08, Becca Watz '02, and Alyssa Cozad '16, Corrin Grooms '18.
