Starting college as an undecided student may be daunting. You may feel that you’re already behind on your four-year degree progress or you may be worried about fitting in on campus. You also may be unsure of how to explore the majors offered at your school and the career outcomes they lead to.
SVSU offers a FREE Strong Interest Inventory® assessment to help students identify their work personality by exploring their interests in six broad areas: realistic, artistic, investigative, social, enterprising, and conventional (often referred to using the acronym RIASEC).

How will the Strong Interest Inventory® assessment help me?
The Strong Interest Inventory® assessment is the most respected and widely used instrument for career exploration / planning in the world. With the reputation for being useful to students, professionals, and individuals at various stages in their exploration and career journey, the Career Services Center is happy to offer the inventory to SVSU's admitted students.
The interest inventory report will help you to identify:
- How to categorize your interest and major or careers that fit with those interests
- Careers that people who are the most similar to you and your interest are in
- What kinds of classes or involvements will help you to “try out” some of your interest areas, majors, or careers
The interest inventory report also provides insight into interests to help you:
- Choose an academic major selection — The Strong assessment helps you uncover your career interests and identify which areas of study are appropriate or required for a particular field.
- With career exploration — The Strong assessment identifies personal interests and how these relate to different occupations, the Strong assessment opens up the world of work to first-time career seekers and people considering a career transition.
- With career development — The Strong assessment heightens your self-awareness and provides a deeper understanding of your individual strengths and blind spots, including work style and orientation to risk-taking.
