Practicum (field) Education

Saginaw Valley State University, the College of Health and Human Services, and the Social Work Program appreciate the opportunities the practicum instructors and practicum agencies provide our students each year.  The Practicum (Field) Education Office developed this site to inform, educate and assist our community partners in providing our students with the best social work learning experience possible. Here, you will find information related to both fall and winter semester course requirements, student expectations, and materials to support our practicum instructors. If you need any help or have any questions, the Practicum Office is available and can be reached at swfield@svsu.edu.

Practicum Instructor Resources

General Practicum Documents

All Practicum Instructors will be provided with relevant documentation upon completion of orientation.

Learning Agreements

Learning agreements are developed during the fall and winter semesters. Students are required to identify learning tasks that prove attainment of competency. It is highly recommended that students and practicum instructors utilize the learning agreement regularly in supervision to discuss progress and to document completion of learning tasks. The learning agreement must be submitted by students near the beginning of the semester as described in the course syllabus. Practicum instructors must complete the final evaluation of the learning agreement and submit it using the submit feature on the document.

Learning Agreements are available to students as a part of their coursework.

Modules

The Practicum Office has developed the following modules to support Practicum Instructor development. The modules are short and informative. Please be sure to input your name and email address prior to viewing the modules.

Syllabi

All syllabi are available to student in their course materials. Copies can be requested by Practicum Instructors from the Practicum Office. Please email them at swfield@svsu.edu

Prospective Practicum Agency Information

Thank you for your interest in becoming a Practicum Placement Site for the Department of Social Work and Youth Services at Saginaw Valley State University!

Below you will find some general information regarding practicum education for the Saginaw Valley State University Bachelor of Social Work program. Please contact the practicum education coordinator using the contact information provided below to learn more about becoming a practicum placement site available to eligible social work students.

Bachelor of Social Work students entering practicum education during the fall semester of their senior year begin the process of identifying a practicum site by attending an event typically held during the spring called agency practicum placement day. This event is similar to a job fair where approved practicum sites educate the student about their programs and practicum education opportunities and the student can provide their resume and express interest to potential practicum sites.

In order to participate in agency practicum placement day, the potential site needs to have met with a social work practicum education coordinator and have a completed placement agreement on file with the University.

The Affiliation Agreement or placement agreement is the formal contract between your agency/organization and Saginaw Valley State University. The practicum education coordinator can provide a copy for placement review prior to initiating the agreement process. The agreement process is initiated at Saginaw Valley State University through having the agreement signed first by the University representative. The University signed agreement is then provided to the prospective placement for signature.

The agreement must be completed and signed by an authorized agency representative such as the Chief Executive Officer, and may be submitted via mail, fax or email to the practicum education coordinator.
