Get to know Steve Hensley, a member of the Alumni Relations Board of Directors. Steve graduated from SVSU in 2013 and 2022 and is the Community & Economic Development Director at Saginaw Future Inc.
Why did you want to join the SVSU Alumni Board?
Following graduation, I remained engaged with the university through a variety of mediums and events. From a career standpoint, I have always been motivated to support efforts that coalesce around retaining young talent to our region. Through a combination of factors, I felt that by taking the next step and serving on the alumni board, it would not only allow me to give back, but to also have a voice in supporting the university, engaging alumni while serving as a conduit to our local businesses and community.
What was your favorite part about SVSU?
My favorite part about SVSU as a student was the relationships and accessible support from faculty. This was something I began to value more in my sophomore and junior years, but it was the student to faculty ratio that helped me succeed and to not be ‘just a number.’ Secondly, I must admit, the facilities at SVSU were something I took for granted early on, but I soon began to realize how much of an asset the spaces and the overall campus contributed to the SVSU experience and quality of the education.
What 3 words would you use to describe SVSU.
Support, value, opportunity
What piece of advice would you give to current SVSU students?
My piece of advice would be to remind current students that SVSU provides its students with a valuable, world-class education. The return on investment is extraordinary. Students are not small fish in a big pond at SVSU. From the tangible to intangible, there is profound opportunity for educational and social experiences, and the potential for establishing dynamic, life-changing relationships.
What is something fun that you do in your leisure time?
I love watching hockey, especially playoff hockey.
If you could see anyone in concert (dead or alive) who would it be?
John Lennon
If you could only eat one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Pasta
