Crystal Sanders

March 2024

Crystal Sanders

Crystal Sanders is a 2006 SVSU alumna who works as Underground Railroad's Volunteer Coordinator. Underground Railroad is an organization that serves victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking, and human slavery in Saginaw County. Crystal loves her job because she gets to interact with individuals who desire to make a difference in the community and help to make Underground Railroad a fantastic organization to assist survivors of domestic and sexual violence.

The SVSU Alumni Relations Office is partnering with Underground Railroad for a volunteer event on March 13 from 4-7 pm at the Resale Store. Volunteers will help to organize and stock donations. If you are interested in volunteering, sign up at https://forms.office.com/r/5XtYnfNt0t.

Life at SVSU

Crystal was a nontraditional student at SVSU; she got her associate's degree from Delta and transferred to SVSU, where she began taking sociology classes and absolutely loved them! While attending SVSU she was raising her children in Birch Run, and found SVSU to be very accommodating to her life as a mom and student.

Underground Railroad

Underground Railroad is an organization that serves victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking, and human slavery in Saginaw County. The shelter has grown in services since its start in 1977. With the many services it provides to the community, the Underground Railroad relies on volunteers to help meet the needs of the survivors they serve. Volunteers serve in the agency’s Resale Store, at agency events and with cleaning and maintenance projects at the shelter, and much more.

Crystal had a background in volunteering and managing volunteers before she began working at Underground Railroad in 2009 as the Volunteer and Outreach Coordinator. Her life motto is never to underestimate the power of volunteers. Underground Railroad was run solely by volunteers during its first year in 1977. Crystal loves that Underground Railroad has a prosperous partnership with SVSU and that she gets many SVSU students and groups to volunteer throughout the year. Every year Underground Railroad also has 8 to 10 interns, many of whom are SVSU students, to help them provide their services. The KTE fraternity at SVSU holds an annual fundraiser for Underground Railroad as well. Crystal loves working with volunteers and helping with moving the Underground Railroad mission forward.
