Cole Roys

March 2024

Cole Roys Headshot

Cole Roys is a 2017 Chemistry graduate who currently works at a think tank that properly disposes of chemical weapons from the US government. He loves his job and the people he works with and could not imagine doing anything else!

Life at SVSU

Cole originally decided to attend SVSU because of its medical school placement rate, but his plans changed once he started taking classes. He went a different direction from medical school, and with his mom being a chemical engineer, he was guided towards chemistry. Cole was an active student on campus, being a member of the Computer Science Club, Program Board, and Residence Housing Association. When Cole wasn’t participating in clubs, you could find him on the 4th floor of the library studying.

Life Beyond SVSU

Cole’s first job outside of SVSU was working at Pfizer in lab information management in Kalamazoo. He found the job boring and was not enjoying his time, so Dr. Corser, a Computer Science professor at SVSU, recommended that he try to work for a think tank to keep him stimulated. Cole had never considered this and began looking into think tanks and applying for some.

He got a job at Battelle 6 years ago and has not looked back. He loves his job as a data analyst where he collaborates with professionals from across the nation to safely dispose of chemical weapons. Through its contract with the United States government, Battelle ensures the proper and secure disposal of chemical weapons, preventing any potential release of harmful substances into the atmosphere. Cole loves working with other “chemistry nerds” to talk about what they love and getting to work with a wide variety of technical equipment and handling hazardous materials. Cole enjoys his free time golfing, hiking, practicing jiu-jitsu, and traveling when not at work. He’s thankful for all the experiences that SVSU offered him and is incredibly thankful for the staff and administration who has helped him along his journey.
