Alina Devoogd is a 2021 SVSU alum who began cultivating her passion for environmental policy at SVSU. Alina appreciated the dedication of her professors and the strong emphasis SVSU places on student achievement. Today, she is pursuing a master’s degree in international environmental policy, aiming to explore the intricate relationship between people and nature. Her goal is to formulate solutions that address climate change while enhancing the well-being of communities connected to the environment.
At SVSU
Alina’s journey at SVSU began when she received the prestigious President’s scholarship. Initially uncertain about her field of study, she knew she wanted to immerse herself in academia indefinitely. With a goal of securing a PhD and nurturing future minds as a professor, Alina ultimately chose to double major in Political Science and Spanish, complemented by a biology minor. Her inspiration for Political Science came from an enlightening honors class on neoliberalism.
Throughout her college experience, Alina actively engaged with the SVSU community. Over three years, she participated in alternative breaks, even stepping up as a site leader during her junior year. As a member of the Honors Corps, she dedicated a year to serving as President and also took on the role of Resident Assistant. In addition, she joined Alpha Phi Omega, a community service fraternity. Alina cherishes the vibrant campus life at SVSU and speaks fondly of her supportive professors and the university's unwavering focus on student development.
Beyond SVSU
After completing her degree in 2021, Alina became a member of Green Corps for a year, where she championed an environmental campaign aimed at passing impactful legislation to combat climate change. This experience solidified her academic focus.
Now, Alina is leveraging her double majors and minor as she pursues a double master's degree in Public Policy and Environmental Science with a concentration in Ecosystem Science and Management from the University of Michigan. With a keen interest in developing policies that tackle climate change, she combines her insights from biology and political science. Alina's particular focus is on coastal regions and understanding the interaction between ecosystems and communities. Her work aims to promote conservation and restoration efforts that benefit both the environment and the people who depend on it.
