Workshops

The Writing Center offers several presentations designed to assist groups of up to 24 students on a variety of topics to help them improve their writing and succeed in their courses. 

All presentations are held in the Writing Center (Zahnow 250) in the Writing Studio. 

To book a presentation for your class on any of these topics, please contact the Writing Center (writingcenter@svsu.edu) or reach out to the Writing Center Director (ddrake1@svsu.edu).

Introduction to the Writing Center

This presentation introduces students to the Writing Center, lists services the Center provides, and details how to book appointments. This presentation usually runs for about 20-30 minutes. 

 

APA 7 

This presentation goes over the basics of APA formatting. This presentation generally runs for about 20 minutes.

 

MLA 9

This presentation goes over the basics of MLA formatting. There is a group scavenger hunt activity using Purdue Owl's website. This presentation runs for about 20 minutes.

 

College Writing, APA, and Plagiarism

This presentation walks through the basics of structuring a college essay, APA formatting, and avoiding plagiarism. 

 

Personal Statements

This presentation outlines the structure of a personal statement, which can be used for certain scholarships, grad school applications, and others.

 

Scholarship Essays

This presentation helps students deconstruct scholarship essay questions and write a response.

 

Writing Survival Tools

This is an interactive workshop where students can learn about and use useful tools in word, google drive, and system settings. It also includes a few mental practices that will aid students in their college careers.
