SVSU Alum Opens Doors to Dentistry
“I believe we all have the responsibility to actively create the kind of world we want to live in.”
- Jessica R. Bentoski, DDS, MS ‘04
Scholarship Mentorship and Generosity
Dr. Jessica Bentoski, a 2004 graduate of SVSU and a pediatric dentist with a thriving practice in Saginaw Township, is committed to helping the next generation of dental professionals.
Jessica established the Dr. Jessica R. Bentoski Endowed Scholarship for Pre-Dental Students, which helps students with the costs of the Dental Admission Test (DAT), preparation materials for the test and other expenses of applying to dental schools. A recipient of the SVSU President’s Scholarship herself, Jessica understands the impact of donor support.
“There is no way I would be where I am today without the generosity of others.”
The Bentoski Scholarship helps students overcome a significant financial hurdle on the path to a career in dentistry. “The DAT is one of the most expensive exams a pre-health student will take,” explains Heidi Lang, pre-health professions advisor at SVSU. “Dr. Bentoski recognizes how the $540 test fee alone is challenging for students to afford, not to mention the additional, costly prep materials needed.”
Since 2016, $9,000 in scholarships has been awarded to pre-dental students. Past recipients are scattered all along a dental school trajectory including those who have graduated or just been accepted. “Students rely on scholarships to reach the end goal – an investment in our students is an investment in our future,” Heidi added.
Jessica also gives her time by hosting hands-on workshops at her practice for SVSU pre-dental students. This valuable exposure to the career helps students discern whether they have chosen the right path.
Through her scholarship, mentorship and generosity, Jessica continues to help students pursue their dreams and create opportunities for future health care professionals.
