Understanding SVSU’s Block Tuition Model

What Is Block Tuition?

Block tuition is a flat-rate model. At SVSU, undergraduates pay one set tuition for 12 to 18 credits per semester. Because additional classes within that range cost nothing extra, you can stay on track to graduate—and save on tuition, housing, and living expenses—while moving more quickly into your career.

How it works

  • Students taking 12 to 18 credits pays the same flat amount.
  • Students taking fewer than 12 pay the standard per-credit rate.
  • Students taking more than 18 credits pay the block tuition plus the standard per-credit rate for each credit above 18.

Key Benefits for Students

Block tuition is designed to support student success. By allowing students to take up to 18 credits for the same cost as 12, it makes it easier to stay on track, and on budget for an on-time graduation. Block tuition model reduces per-credit fees, simplifies billing, allows students to explore a minor and other electives at no additional cost and helps reduce the total cost of college by shortening the time to degree.

  • Finish your degree faster – With no added cost for extra credits, many students enroll in 15+ credits a term and meet graduation requirements sooner.
  • Avoid delays in required classes – The flat rate makes it easier to add high-demand or prerequisite courses, keeping your schedule on track.
  • Flexible enrollment – You can swap or add classes without worrying about surprise fees, letting you adjust your schedule as needed.
