Rachel Van Slembrouck 300x300

Meet Rachel Van Slembrouck, a 2013 SVSU graduate. She knew that she wanted to be an accountant from an early age and chose to attend SVSU because of its stand out 5-year Bachelor in Professional Accountancy program. That choice led her to an internship at Yeo & Yeo, which has blossomed into her current role as Principal at the firm. Rachel credits SVSU for the opportunities and support that have shaped her successful career.

Life at SVSU

From a young age, Rachel had a passion for numbers that set her on a clear path toward accounting. This passion led her to choose SVSU, drawn by its reputable 5-year Bachelor in Professional Accountancy program, ideal for aspiring CPAs. Among all of her classes, one that stood out was Introduction to Accounting, taught by professor Marilyn Knight. It was in that classroom where Rachel felt a strong confirmation that she was on the right path.

Life beyond SVSU

In may of 2013, Rachel proudly graduated from SVSU and stepped into her first professional role at Yeo & Yeo in Saginaw. Having interned there previously that year, she was thrilled to continue her journey with a company that felt like the right fit. Fast forward to today, and Rachel has spent over a decade at Yeo & Yeo—a milestone that still amazes her. She began as a staff accountant while preparing for her CPA exam, then advanced to a Senior Accountant role upon earning her certification. Today, she holds the position of Principal at the firm.

Rachel thrives in the dynamic environment at Yeo & Yeo, where the company culture and the people make her daily experience rewarding. Contrary to the common stereotype of accountants, her days are anything but monotonous. The variety of projects and clients keeps her engaged, even though managing multiple responsibilities can be a mental workout.

SVSU played a crucial role in preparing Rachel for her career. The relationships she forged with classmates and professors provided a supportive network, and her professors were always willing to help, even introducing her to valuable professional connections. Rachel is grateful for the foundation SVSU provided, which has been instrumental in her success.

For fellow alumni and current students, Rachel's story is a testament to the impactful education and community at SVSU. The journey may be challenging, but with the right support and determination, the possibilities are endless.
