I'm in my first semester at SVSU! What should I be doing and thinking about?

Your First Year Advising Appointment is the third and final step to your orientation to SVSU. All first-year students are required to meet with an Peer or Academic Advisor at least during your first two terms to create a degree plan and talk through graduation requirements. Student must have this completed prior to April 1st in order to register for their second year of classes. To schedule your appointment, click here!

There are soooooo many great resources SVSU has to help you navigate your academics, involvement, and more! We can't list them all here, but click the bottom of the page to see an alphabetical listing of all the departments and resources we have on campus.

Want a person to help guide you through what you need to know, get in touch with our Peer Advocates located in Wickes 117! Walk-in anytime they are there to learn about all things SVSU. Learn more about our Peer Advocates here.

But, wait! There's more! You can also chat with our AI Chatbot Coop! He may just be a way to assist. Use the chat feature here on the page or via your cell.

Did you know there is more to college than going to class? I bet you did! But, how do you find out what great things there are to do at SVSU? Learn about organizations, events and more at SVSU Engage! Getting involved helps you connect with peers and find your true passion. There's something for everyone!

Want to learn more on the go? Download the Corq app on your phone to find out what's up. (Hint: Hungry? You can even filter by if events have food!)

Nothing has to be written in stone yet, but your first semester is a great time to start considering what major(s) or minor(s) you might want to pursue. We have so many resources to help you! Check out this link to learn about the FOCUS 2, "What can I do with my Major?", the SVSU catalog and more!

Know what career you are interested or what skills you are good at? Want to learn what major supports these? Career Services has you covered!

SVSU professors are some of the best in the land! But, don't just take our word! Go to office hours! Introduce yourself before or after class! Build relationships! It can feel intimidating because they are super cool and smart, but they will be there when you need help and later when you need letters of recommendation. Check your syllabus on how you connect with your professors today!

College is hard. Actually hard. We are here to help! Get to know your professors and ask for help, start a study group with classmates, and get a tutor early in the semester. These are things students do who want better grades, not just to avoid failing. To learn about all the academic support services we offer, visit the Gerstacker Learning Commons webpage or stop by to see what they are all about on the second floor of Zahnow Library!

But I just did this, right? Yep, but we do it every year! Click here to learn what you need to do to renew your FAFSA. Renewal opens October 1st and priority deadline is February 15th. Save the date!

Show me the money! Get more dollars for your hard work at SVSU with Private Scholarships! Applications open Decmeber 1st and close April 1st. Apply here ASAP!

Did we already mention college is hard? Yep, and we will mention it again. Make sure you are seeking support from Accessability Resources and Accommodations as soon as you need them, Campus Mental Health and Wellness programs, or talk to a Peer Advocate to see how we can get you connected with the support you need. We are here to help and support, just let us know what we can do!
