Immersing myself in a new culture and creating lifelong connections are just scraping the surface of my time in Australia. I learned how to be more independent--navigating new cities, advocating for what I needed, and going on spontaneous adventures! Each experience taught me to trust my instincts and handle unexpected situations with grace. I also feel far more confident in the direction my life is taking, which has been incredibly empowering. I truly encourage others to take the leap; the personal growth you'll experience is invaluable!

International Studies Major
Students can tailor their studies by focusing on a specific region of the world:
International Studies combines courses from multiple disciplines to provide a well-rounded understanding of global systems. Among others, you will study topics in:
Students also complete a foreign language requirement, helping build communication skills that are essential for working across cultures. Additional coursework is focused on your chosen area of concentration.
An International Studies degree prepares students for careers in an increasingly connected world, including government and diplomacy, nonprofits, education, the travel industry, global marketing, and immigration or public policy. Graduates pursue roles such as Study Abroad advisor, ESL teacher, and Global Marketing Analyst.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, many of these fields are projected to grow, with strong demand for skills like cross-cultural communication, critical thinking and global awareness. At SVSU, students build these in-demand skills while customizing their degree to stand out in careers that span cultures and borders.
International Studies majors explore global issues, cultures, and systems that shape our world. From politics and economics to language and culture, the program prepares students to think critically and act globally in an increasingly interconnected society.
Study abroad is a key part of that experience. It allows students to move beyond the classroom, gaining firsthand insight into different cultures, perspectives, and ways of life. These experiences build adaptability, communication skills, and a deeper understanding of global challenges—skills that stand out to employers and graduate programs.
SVSU offers a variety of study abroad opportunities to support International Studies majors and other students interested in global learning. Whether it’s a short-term faculty-led program or a longer exchange, these experiences are designed to be accessible, meaningful, and aligned with academic goals.

Studying abroad has been one of the most meaningful and life-changing parts of being an International Studies major. I was able to study abroad in Seoul, South Korea and Salamanca, Spain. Both trips were in distinct cities with completely different cultures and norms. Traveling to Seoul was my very first time on a plane so everything about that environment was new. In Seoul, I experienced a fast paced, metropolitan city where history met and interacted with modern technology. Through my summer program, I expanded my world view and knowledge about East Asian politics. The historical buildings, art, and food made me appreciate the deep beauty of Korean culture. While Studying in Salamanca, I fully immersed myself in the Spanish language. The historic university city was the perfect location to experience everyday Spanish life. The major requires students to learn a language, and I truly saw the benefits of this in real life. Being surrounded by Spanish every day strengthened my language skills and love for communication across borders. The highlight of my study in Spain was visiting local cafes and talking with the sweet old aunties who were very excited I was learning Spanish. Unlike Seoul, which is a gigantic city, Salamanca is much smaller and you can truly connect with the local community. The strong friendships and connections I now have across the world help make the distance feel a little closer.
My experiences directly impacted my perspective on life and international issues. Seeing the world for the first time showed me how essential it is to move beyond textbooks and open my eyes to new possibilities. Every experience I encountered has helped shape me into a stronger, more confident person. Nothing could ever replace those memories. I would strongly encourage any student but specifically an International Studies major to study abroad if the opportunity arises. It pushes you out of your comfort zone and helps you grow academically and professionally. My experiences have contributed to how I interact with global issues and influenced my goals going forward.

Common combinations include:

I was provided the opportunity to intern for a month during the summer in Tokyo, Japan, at Gaku Inc., a company specializing in aiding smaller to medium-sized enterprises with marketing their unique products internationally. Throughout my time at Gaku, I of course learned more about marketing strategies, but also how a smaller, modern Japanese business functions in regard to organizational structure and cultural differences between it and one in the United States. Coworkers work closely together towards a common goal and have at least a basic understanding of each other’s positions. They value collaboration and cohesion, as well as build strong relationships between each other and their clients.
Being involved in their marketing processes also gave me the chance to view how American politics can influence businesses in other countries from a much different perspective. It was a valuable reminder of the deep connections between our country and Japan, as well as how each other’s decisions can impact the other on a small scale.
There was also the impact of how meaningful it is to at least attempt to speak to a citizen native to a country one is visiting. Although there were very many instances when I could not understand everything a coworker or a store employee was saying, for example, there were also many when they appreciated my effort in trying to converse with them in their language and learn from my weak points. This has been especially essential as I get closer to finishing my Japanese minor. I sound more natural when I speak it, and I am not as afraid of making a mistake as I was before. All of these lessons will prove advantageous as I prepare to become a translator, and I am incredibly grateful for those who helped me before, during, and after my internship.
