How do scholarships work for study abroad?

Scholarships do not have to be specifically related to study abroad or international experiences to apply.
Any scholarships or financial aid you receive for the semester you are studying abroad can typically be applied to your program. This may include: SVSU merit-based scholarships, federal aid (grants and loans), and many private scholarships
To be considered for many SVSU scholarships and federal aid, students must have a FAFSA on file.
Look into off campus scholarships as well such as the Gilman Scholarship below!

How Billing Works:

Study abroad program fees are billed the same way as tuition for a regular semester at SVSU. Once a program provider sends an invoice to the university, the fee is added to the student's MySVSU self-service account.
Scholarships, grants, loans, and other eligible financial aid are then applied to a student's account to reduce the balance owed
Some study abroad programs cost less than a regular semester at SVSU. If scholarships and financial aid exceed a program charges, student's may receive the remaining funds as a refund

*Please note that some scholarships have closing dates outside of deadlines presented in this table. The closing date listed on the SVSU Scholarship Database overrides any dates on this page.

Students planning to study abroad can apply for several private SVSU scholarships. The table below highlights key details, but each scholarship has additional requirements.

Dr. Heidi L. Febert Memorial Award	Applicant must: Have at least a 3.30 cumulative GPA in history courses Be a Junior or Senior at SVSU Be a History, History Education or Social Studies Education major Be first-generation college student The award can only be used for History, History Education or Social Studies Education study abroad programs Amount $400 Application Deadline March 15, 2027
International Study Abroad Endowed Scholarship	Applicant must: Have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 Be studying abroad for at least one semester Demonstrate financial need Preferences given for: Studying in a non-English speaking country International studies and foreign language majors/minors The award CANNOT be used for Non-credit bearing study abroad programs Amount $1,500 Application Deadlines September 15, 2026 April 1, 2027
Study Abroad Experience Scholarship	Applicant must: Have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 Demonstrate financial need Preferences given: For students who have never studied abroad before For students who are studying abroad for at least one semester The award CANNOT be used: To exceed the total program cost For non-credit bearing study abroad programs Amount $1,500 Application Deadlines September 15, 2026 April 1, 2027
SVSU Korean Study Abroad Scholarships	Applicant must: Be studying abroad in S. Korea for at least one semester or be committed to participate in a faculty-led study abroad trip to Korea An exception to this is participation in Kyung Hee University's summer program The award CANNOT be used for: Study abroad programs outside of S. Student Association Study Abroad Endowed Scholarship	Applicant must: Have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.50 Have been a student at SVSU for at least one academic year full-time Plan on studying abroad within the next four semesters (Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter) Amount Varies Application closes for the year March 15th, 2027
Judy Zehnder Keller Bavarian Inn Fellowship for Study Abroad in Germany	This fellowship is available to students, faculty and staff who wish to pursue a study abroad, research, or exchange experience Applicant must: Study at the University of Wurzburg or University of Hochschule Ansbach, or in the Frankenmuth German sister city of Guzenhausen or the Bay City German sister city of Ansbach. Be enrolled at least half-time and maintain good academic standing Submit a final report at the conclusion of their experience and be available to participate in a Frankenmuth and/or SVSU community events Amount $1,000 - $2,000 Application ongoing for the year
Exchange Program Scholarship	Partnership Exchange Programs are now charged SVSU Block Tuition But receive up to $2,400, applied after other institutional aid (not including: State and federal aid or other study abroad scholarships) Can not be given as a part of a refund Brings program fees to an estimated $4,700

Gilman International Scholarship

For students who receive a Pell Grant, are in good academic standing, and attending a credit-bearing study abroad or internship program
Award amount: up to $5,000.

Boren Scholarship

For language study programs, minimum of 8 weeks, outside of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand
Award amount: up to $25,000 for 25-52 weeks and $12,500 for 12-24 weeks

Freeman Awards for Study in Asia

For U.S. citizens or permanent residents who demonstrate financial need to study abroad in East or Southeast Asia
Award amount

Summer: up to $3,000
Semester: up to $5,000
Academic Year: up to $7,000

Fulbright U.S. Student Program
