Cultural Immersion in Argentina

Experience the cosmopolitan city of Buenos Aries and its multiple national monuments. Participate in observations of bilingual programs, creative art workshops, and learn about the national dance of Argentina, the Tango. Immerse yourself in the culture by living with host families and trying the delicious culinary delights of Argentina.

Oregon Coastal Biology

Investigate marine life at a famous marine science center. Hike and study coastal rain forests. Explore the intertidal zone. Earn gen ed or biology major credit.

International Healthcare in China

See inside healthcare in China and job shadow nurses as they conduct their professional roles in acute care, rehabilitation, and home care. Learn about Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), including herbal treatments, acupuncture, and cupping. Take a nighttime cruise on the Pearl River and experience a therapeutic Chinese foot massage.

Biology in Ecuador

Explore three of the world’s most iconic ecosystems: the Andean highlands, the Amazon rainforest, and the Galápagos Islands. Study tropical ecosystems, participate in guided field activities, and experience Ecuadorian culture firsthand. From wildlife encounters to conservation discussions, this immersive program offers a unique blend of science, nature, and cultural discovery.

International Healthcare in Scotland

Collaborate with students from Edinburgh Napier University at their Interprofessional Learning Conference. Compare and contrast the U.S. social support systems and our reactions to poverty. Be paired with an ENU student for activities. Provide the SVSU Poverty Simulations to the ENU students and faculty. Attend a Caliegh (traditional Scottish bagpipe party/dance) with our colleagues.

Interprofessional Experience in Nursing and OT in Ghana

Explore Ghana’s rich history and culture with visits to significant sites like Cape Coast Castle, Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum, and Bonwire Kente Market, alongside opportunities to engage with local arts and traditions. Learn about healthcare in Ghana (and West Africa) from practitioners at Korle Bu teaching hospital and the University of Ghana.

Chemistry and Travel Photography in Italy

Visit Venice, Florence, and Rome. Walk the streets where Leonardo and Michelangelo designed some of their most famous artworks. Tour the Uffizi, Vatican, and Guggenheim with both an artistic and scientific eye. Experience one of the largest contemporary art exhibitions in the world set amidst the canals of Venice. Visit conservation labs and meet art/science professionals.

Types of Study Abroad Programs

Faculty-Led Study Abroad Program

Faculty-led study abroad trips are a very popular option for SVSU students. A group of 10-20 SVSU students travels with two faculty leaders and take a course on the trip. Here are some reasons why we love faculty-led study abroad:

These trips are short! Usually between 1-3 weeks. Some faculty-led groups travel over spring break. Others travel during the spring and summer semesters.
You travel as a group. Some students prefer traveling with others rather than alone - these trips are great for that.
Flights, travel insurance, and sometimes visas are arranged by the Office of International Programs, which is convenient for students.
Destinations, subjects, and courses vary every year

Students who choose faculty-led trips receive all the same benefits as other study abroad participants. Pre-departure orientation, emergency support, and re-entry support are included in the faculty-led study abroad programs.

SVSU has relationships with many universities overseas that allow the exchange of students between universities. In most cases, students live on campus and study alongside local students. These programs are the most affordable type of program.

Provider Program

Program providers are companies that work with SVSU to send students abroad. They help to coordinate the logistics for you by providing students with on-site orientations, securing housing, course registration, in-country support, cultural activities, excursions, and more.

On provider programs you'll have the option to choose between many different destinations, course options, housing options, and program dates. You're also guaranteed to receive SVSU credit and are able to use all of your financial aid and scholarship toward the program cost. Explore provider websites:

JCMU is partnered with various schools both in and out of Michigan in order to promote study abroad programs in Japan
Born from the strong sister state relationship existing between the State of Michigan and Shiga Prefecture, the Japan Center for Michigan Universities (JCMU) has run programs in Hikone since 1989

Student Teaching Abroad

The Study Abroad Office has teamed up with the College of Education to offer future teachers the opportunity to complete part of their student teaching semester abroad. In partnership with Global Gateway, you have the option of completing half of your student teaching abroad semester in Michigan and the other half in one of many exciting destinations abroad!

K-12 and Secondary Education majors qualify.

Internships Abroad

If you're interested in a career-building experience that looks great on a résumé, an internship abroad is a great option for you. SVSU works with its providers to offer internships all over the world, either combined with a study abroad experience or as a stand-alone trip.
