The Francis X. Mackenna Endowed Chemistry Student Research Grant

The Francis X. MacKenna Endowed Chemistry Research Grant provides funding for student researcher stipends and limited support for materials and supplies for research projects led by faculty members in chemistry or biochemistry. The grant application must be initiated by the faculty mentor; the student researcher may be included as a co-applicant if they are actively involved in drafting the research proposal.

Selection will be based on the merits of the research project. Those projects which involve significant instrumental work or development will be given priority. The selection committee will determine the rate of compensation for the student researcher in accord with the criteria detailed in item 2 under Program Requirements.

Eligibility: Faculty in chemistry or biochemistry pursuing research in collaboration with one or more student researchers.

Program Requirements

1. It is expected that research supported by the program will eventually lead to publication(s) in refereed journals and that acknowledgment of the support provided by the Francis X. MacKenna Endowment will be made.

2. Grants made to faculty through the MacKenna Endowment will support projects up to one full year, including up to 20 hours per week of student research work during the Fall/Winter semesters. Students may receive support for up to 30 hours per week during the Spring/Summer semester. The hourly rate will be determined with consideration for the current rates for industrial-funded student research, the advantages of on-campus research, the student’s educational experience, and University regulations for student employment positions.

3. Funding for materials, supplies, and other project-related costs will not exceed $1,000 per year. (Slight flexibility for inflation or other factors may be considered at the discretion of the selection committee.)

4. The faculty advisor in conjunction with his research student may apply for continued support in future years to the Chair of the Chemistry Department and Endowed Chair/Professor of Chemistry. (Approval of continued funding will be determined on both merit/progress achieved to date in the research and the availability of funds.)

Student Researcher Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible as a MacKenna Endowment student researcher, candidates must:
