• Research current available opportunities using SVSU membership search engines for grants and external resources
• Download the grant application and guidelines
• Read the guidelines to determine if you are eligible to apply
• Note the application deadline date and time. Determine if it may meet your need
• Meet with Sponsored Programs and review opportunity. Get materials deadline
• SP can provide templates which will help you when you write the grant and budget - you are the subject matter expert
• Prepare your application and budget off-line in a word document so you can proof and edit. You will write this grant
• Use the tips provided on the Sponsored Programs website to develop your proposal
• Gain your dean’s approval and engagement in the project
• Ensure your project deadline is achievable and ensure you have done the pre-work for any research approvals needed or IT hardware/software approval. Approval of these items can affect successful implementation and your timeline
• Submit all materials to Sponsored Programs for routing, approvals and Sponsored Programs will submit the grant on behalf of SVSU
• Once submitted, the system will send you a notice your application has been submitted
• You will receive a notification if you did or did not receive an award

Sponsored Programs will help after the award is granted.

To support you we:

• Host a grant kick-off meeting to review budget, processes, provide grant # to use for purchases
• We will meet quarterly and provide budget reports to help you stay on track of spending. Any ineligible expenses or overages cannot be charged to the grant and are the lead’s responsibility
• If you need budget modification or propose a change in scope to the project, Sponsored Programs is the liaison to the funding contact and can seek approval on your behalf
• We can provide training on how you can submit expenses into Workday for your grant and provide job aids and resources which help you implement
• We review and approve all purchases you submit to ensure they are eligible and within approved budget
• We help facilitate connections with other University offices who can assist and provide helpful resources for your grant
• Hold a 90-day close-out meeting, to ensure the grant is on track to complete as planned
• Grant extensions are not encouraged but occasionally necessary and can be granted if the guidelines allow. Sponsored Programs can provide a grant extension request form and route for approval and seek permissions from the funder
• Sponsored Programs sends report reminders to assist in grant wrap-up activities

Grants Resource Center Run through American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU), The Grant Resource Center offers weekly emails with funding opportunities, newsletters, workshops, and an online resource library. You can also search for grants by keyword using their Grant Search tool.

InfoEd (SPIN)
SPIN is a large, easy-to-use database with funding opportunities from thousands of sponsors. You can search by keywords, project type, location, and more. https://spin.infoedglobal.com/Authorize/Login

SMARTS alerts work with SPIN to send you automatic email alerts when new opportunities match your saved searches. You can choose how often you get updates (daily or weekly).

Private and Local Community Foundation Grants – Start by contacting Sponsored Programs for assistance with your search. Sponsored Programs will coordinate with SVSU Foundation prior to application. This helps SVSU strategically align funding priorities and ensures multiple grants are not submitted to a single foundation during a grant cycle.
