SVSU Student Scholarship

The Theodore Roethke Student Writing Award is worth $2,000 and given every three years in conjunction with the triennial Theodore Roethke Poetry & Arts Festival. The deadline for the 2020 award is August 1, 2020.

Applicants must be SVSU students with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0. Applicants should submit the following materials via SVSU’s electronic scholarship system (https://www.svsu.edu/admissions/scholarships/):

  • An essay of 750-1,000 words explaining their strengths as writers and how the award could help them reach their goals
  • A portfolio of their polished creative work, either up to six poems or twenty pages of fiction
  • A cover letter
  • Their résumé
  • A copy of their transcripts

The selection committee will consider the quality of each application, as well as each candidate’s promise for continued growth and excellence in the field of creative writing.

This award was graciously created by The Friends of Theodore Roethke, an organization dedicated “to promot[ing], preserv[ing] and protect[ing] the literary legacy of Theodore Roethke by restoring his family residences in Saginaw, Michigan, for cultural and educational opportunities.”
