MSU Shooting Response

February 14, 2023

Dear SVSU Community,

SVSU sends our profound condolences to Michigan State University during this heartbreaking and tragic time.  At SVSU, we have been monitoring the MSU situation and have offered our steadfast support.

SVSU is committed to creating a safe and supportive learning environment for our faculty, staff, and students, including strong safety and security measures. This is a time to strengthen the support and relationships within the campus community.  During this time of heightened stress and concern, SVSU stands firm in providing a safe, caring, and trusted place for the campus community.

I have decided to keep the university open. By staying open, SVSU demonstrates resilience in the face of adversity. Moving forward helps those affected by violence reclaim some sense of normalcy during challenging times. Remaining open can help promote healing among students by providing them with much-needed group support from peers.

For students who would benefit from speaking to a professional counselor, we have 24/7 crisis support available through our Campus Mental Health and Wellness Center by phone at 989-964-7078.  For further crisis support details, you can access the Campus Mental Health & Wellness Center at the following link: Campus Mental Health & Wellness Center.

For faculty and staff, we have 24/7 support available through our Employee Assistance Program by phone at 1-800-448-8326, and more information is available at SVSU Employee Assistance Program.

I spoke with University Police earlier today, and they understand their responsibility to ensure the highest level of safety for the campus community. Please know that we are committed to maintaining a safe campus environment for everyone.

Anna Peruski, a nursing student, has been in touch with administration and a vigil is being planned at the Edwards Bell Tower tonight at 8:18 pm. More information regarding the vigil will come out later today.

We are here to support you and any decision you make to ensure your safety and mental health.

Sincerely,

George Grant Jr., President
