As a parent or guardian of an SVSU student, you play a vital role in your student's successful college experience.
While we have loved hosting a Parent and Family Orientation in the past, this event has been cancelled for the 2021 season in order minimize the total number of people in attendance and to allow for the meeting spaces needed to more safely disperse the student sessions.
While we are very disappointed that we cannot offer this programming face-to-face this year, parents/guests will be encouraged to view relevant materials online instead. We will be posting on a dedicated parent orientation website, and will email students and parents when that resource is published and available. We also plan to host online Zoom sessions specifically for parents in July and August, so stay tuned for more details on those as well.
Why should my student attend orientation?
At SVSU, we feel it is important for students to become familiar with academic requirements, important deadlines, and the University calendar. We also want to help students find their way around campus and introduce them to academic support services and extracurricular opportunities. During orientation, students will receive academic advising, schedule classes, and learn about ways to get involved on campus. We've also seen many lasting friendships begin at SOAR and have a significant impact on students.
Due to the ongoing pandemic, we have both in-person and online SOAR sessions available to accomodate student preferences. We look forward to offering the same interactive and engaging sessions in both formats!
Is orientation required?
Orientation is required for all incoming students.
When will my student receive information about SOAR (Orientation)?
After the student has applied and been accepted to SVSU, they should receive an Admissions Packet. Included will be information on the SOAR program, as well as instructions on how to reserve their SOAR date. Students can make a reservation by following the steps outlined in Next Steps.
Will my student get the orientation day they want?
Orientation days are reserved on a first-come, first-served basis. Once the registration is received, a confirmation screen is displayed instantly, and confirmation materials with the assigned SOAR date will be mailed to the student.
What can parents do during orientation?
Although COVID restricts us from offering a formal parent program at SOAR, we recognize that you may still have remaining questions about how this whole college process works. If you plan to drive to campus with your student for SOAR, our student services offices will be available to meet with parents in-person about individual questions. (Please remember that due to COVID restrictions and room capacities, you will not be able to attend the orientation sessions with your student.)
If you are interested in a meeting with a Financial Aid representative, we request that you sign up ahead of time by emailing Leah Smith, Customer Service Coordinator, at email@example.com.
Optional Housing Tours will be available from 8:15-8:45am before SOAR begins. To participate, you will check in with your child for orientation and we will direct your family group to our housing units (note that students are welcome to bring up to two parents/guests).
Parent-only Campus Tours will also be available on your student's SOAR date. To sign up, please email Remington Bennett, Tour Coordinator, at firstname.lastname@example.org.
If you are not planning to come to campus but would still like to speak with us, we also have virtual options available for you to schedule at any time. You can set up a Financial Aid appointment, set up an Admissions appointment, or check out our virtual tour!
Will I see my student during SOAR?
No. Students will be attending sessions with their small group for the duration of the day.
How many students attend each SOAR?
There are 100 students at each SOAR event.
What accommodations are made for those with special needs?
If your student will need services to fully participate in orientation such as large print, interpreting services, braille, assistance filling out forms or assistance reading forms, please call us at 989-964-4070 or email email@example.com. SVSU is committed to provide equal access to all university services, programs, and activities. See information on policies, procedures, resources, and forms available to current students.
Who can I contact for further information?
