MSN Core, Capstone and Concentration Courses

All students in the MSN program complete the following MSN Core Courses and Capstone Courses (16 credits). All MSN students must select one of the following concentrations:  Nurse Educator (total program = 34 credits), Nurse Administrator (total program = 34 credits), or Primary Care Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP total program = 53 credits), or may elect to take both the education and administration concentrations.

MSN Core (16 cr)

  • NURS 638 - Nursing Theory & Knowledge Development 3 cr
  • NURS 772 - Epidemiology & Population Health in ANP 3 cr
  • NURS 617 - Nursing Informatics & Quality Improvement 2 cr
  • NURS 624 - Foundations for Research in ANP 2 cr
  • NURS 626 - Critical Inquiry in ANP 2 cr
  • NURS 630 - Policy & Leadership in ANP 2 cr

Additional MSN Core for Nurse Administrator, Nurse Educator, and CNL students (6 cr)

  • NURS 662 - Pathophysiology & Pharmacology for ANP 3 cr
  • NURS 668 - Advanced Clinical Practice 3 cr (includes 120 practice experience hours)

Concentration Courses

Nursing Education (18 cr)

The following three courses are required:

  • NURS 652 - Teaching & Learning in Nursing Education 3 cr
  • NURS 654 - Assessment, Technology, & Nurse Educator 3 cr
  • NURS 656 - Nursing Curriculum Design & Evaluation 3 cr
  • NURS 662 - Pathophysiology & Pharmacology for ANP 3 cr
  • NURS 668 - Advanced Clinical Practice 3 cr
  • NURS 766 - Health Assessment & Genomics for ANP 3 cr

Nursing Administration (18 cr)

One nursing administration course is required and then an additional 6 credits of pre-approved graduate electives are required. The list of approved electives is available from the Graduate Nursing Coordinator.

  • NURS 658 - Foundations of Nursing Administration 3 cr
  • NURS 662 - Pathophysiology & Pharmacology for ANP 3 cr
  • NURS 668 - Advanced Clinical Practice 3 cr
  • NURS 766 - Health Assessment & Genomics for ANP 3 cr
  • Additional 6 credits graduate administrative electives approved by the Department of Nursing are required.

Primary Care Family Nurse Practitioner (31 cr)

  • NURS 610 - Pathophysiology for FNP 3 cr
  • NURS 612 - Pharmacology for FNP 3 cr
  • NURS 636 - Differential Diagnosis 1 cr
  • NURS 615 - Advanced Health Assessment 4 cr
  • NURS 620 - Health Promotion and Role for FNP 3 cr
  • NURS 641 - Primary Care I FNP for Chronicity 3 cr
  • NURS 643 - Primary Care II FNP for Pediatrics 3 cr
  • NURS 645 - Primary Care III Gender/Mental Health 3 cr
  • NURS 647 - Primary Care IV FNP for Acute/Transition 3 cr
  • NURS 651 - Clinical Office Procedures 1 cr
  • Nurs 674A - FNP Clinical A 2-4 cr (120-240 clinical/practice hours)
  • Nurs 674B - FNP Clinical B 2-4 cr (120-240 clinical/practice hours)
  • Nurs 674C - FNP Clinical C 2-4 cr (120-240 clinical/practice hours)
  • Nurs 674D - FNP Clinical D 2-4 cr (120-240 clinical/practice hours)
  • NURS-674 A,B,C, and D (if needed) are a total of 10 credits and 600 total clinical/practice experience hours in 2-4 credits increments taken concurrently with the Family Health Care I, II, and III.  

Dual Nursing Education/Nursing Administration (27 cr)

  • NURS 658 - Foundations of Nursing Administration 3 cr
  • NURS 652 - Teaching & Learning in Nursing Education 3 cr
