In their first year of collegiate competitive speech, six Saginaw Valley State University students have proven themselves up to the challenge, earning a third-place finish in the Michigan Intercollegiate Speech League Novice State Championship Tournament. Seven colleges competed at the event, which took place at Northwood University on Saturday, Feb. 15.
Christi A. Merrill, an expert in South Asian literature and postcolonial theory, will present a lecture exploring our relationship to text and image across language and culture. The event will take place on Thursday, March 20, at 6 p.m. in the Rhea Miller Recital Hall at SVSU. The lecture is free and open to the public.
The Saginaw Valley State University moot court duo of Nikolas Baker and Diva Patel have set a new record for the program, finishing fifth in the nation at the American Moot Court Association final round of the national tournament.
Saginaw Valley State University’s theatre department presents “Women Who Weave,” a play that draws on Greek mythology to present heroism as a choice vs. a destiny. The show runs Wednesday-Saturday, Feb. 19-22, at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 23, at 3 p.m. All performances will be held in SVSU’s Malcolm Field Theatre for the Performing Arts.
In celebration of Black History Month, SVSU’s Office of Diversity Programs will host “A Taste of Soul” on Thursday, Feb. 27, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Marketplace at Doan near SVSU’s Curtiss Hall. The cost is $13 per person; SVSU faculty, staff and students may also use their meal card.

Veronica Hicks, Ph.D., will be a visiting artist at Saginaw Valley State University from Tuesday, Feb. 4–Thursday, Feb. 6. During her stay, she will facilitate a cyanotype fabric printing workshop, present a lecture, model a lesson plan with education students, and meet with university students and faculty.

The Saginaw Valley State University Board of Control passed housing and dining rates for the 2025-26 fiscal year during the Board’s regular meeting Friday, Dec. 13. The new auxiliary fund budget includes a simplification and standardization of rates for students living on campus next year.
