Dow Visiting Artist Dr. Veronica Hicks to Visit SVSU and Marshall M. Fredericks Sculpture Museum

Veronica Hicks, Ph.D., will be a visiting artist at Saginaw Valley State University from Tuesday, Feb. 4–Thursday, Feb. 6. Hicks is an assistant professor and licensure coordinator in the department of art education at Virginia Commonwealth University. During her stay, she will facilitate a cyanotype fabric printing workshop, present a lecture, model a lesson plan with education students, and meet with university students and faculty.

As a guest lecturer under the Dow Visiting Scholars & Artists Program, Hicks will shape her programming around the exhibition “David C. Driskell & Friends: Creativity, Collaboration & Friendship,” on view at the Marshall M. Fredericks Sculpture Museum on the campus of SVSU through Saturday, Feb. 22. Hicks will present a lecture in the Museum on Wednesday, Feb. 5, at 6:00 p.m. titled, “Realizing David Driskell’s Vision: The Role of African American Art in Shaping Our Collective Future.”

On Tuesday, Feb. 4, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., . Hicks will lead a free cyanotype fabric printing workshop at the Marshall M. Fredericks Sculpture Museum. Inspired by the “David C. Driskell & Friends” exhibition, this interactive workshop will allow participants to create their own cyanotype fabric prints. Supplies are provided. Space is limited to 24 participants. K-12 teachers can earn State Continuing Education Clock Hours (SCECH).  RSVP is required.

Hicks is an expert in art education, focusing on preparing pre-service art teachers to connect, empathize and offer meaningful choices to their students. Her research examines race, gender and ability dynamics in art education, exploring policy and power structures while centering the experiences of women of color art teachers and art students with disabilities. Holding a dual Ph.D. in art education and women’s, gender, and sexuality studies, Hicks is a former PreK-12 art teacher and currently serves as the Virginia Art Education Association’s research representative.

The SVSU Art Department and the Marshall M. Fredericks Sculpture Museum secured funds from the Dow Visiting Scholars and Artists endowment at SVSU to bring Hicks to campus.

The Marshall M. Fredericks Sculpture Museum is located on the campus of Saginaw Valley State University, 7400 Bay Road, University Center, Michigan.
