SVSU’s “A Taste of Soul” celebrates 15 years of African American food and culture

In celebration of Black History Month, SVSU’s Office of Diversity Programs will host “A Taste of Soul” on Thursday, Feb. 27, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Marketplace at Doan near SVSU’s Curtiss Hall. The cost is $13 per person; SVSU faculty, staff and students may also use their meal card.

This is the 15th year SVSU has hosted “A Taste of Soul,” which features culinary selections from African American culture. This year, Men of Bethel/Sons of Allen from Bethel A.M.E. Church in Saginaw return as culinary guests. They will be joined by Brenda Moore, mayor of Saginaw, as well as SVSU faculty and staff. On the menu are familiar soul food classics like catfish, black-eyed peas, macaroni and cheese, fried okra, as well as peach cobbler and sweet potato pie. Moore contributed the recipe for this year’s featured dessert, caramel cake.

“’A Taste of Soul’ is one of our signature events, and we invite the community to join us in fellowship and celebration,” said Mamie Thorns, the university’s associate vice president and chief diversity officer for diversity, equity and inclusion.
