Cardinal Champions: Cheer, Dance, Softball Stand Out
|
SVSU Cardinals are at the top of their game! Proving that grit, determination and preparation pay off, SVSU student-athletes have claimed national and GLIAC championships.
In April, the SVSU cheer team reigned supreme at the NCA-NDA College Nationals, claiming the top spot in the Intermediate Small Coed Division II Finals! After placing third in 2024 and second in 2025, the team went into this year's championship determined to make program history once again. During the two-minute-15-second routine featuring elite stunt skills, high-level tumbling, pyramids and choreography, they did just that.
SVSU dance left it all on the floor at The College Classic, becoming five-time national champions! The Cardinals claimed a three-peat victory in Division II Pom, dominated the DII Team Performance category and took fourth place in the Spirit Showdown Rally Dance. The Team Performance score was the seventh-highest of all teams in all divisions, proving Cardinals can compete at any level. First-year dance coach Kat Albertson won the Student Club Awards Club Sport Coach of the Year Award for the 2025-2026 school year.
The SVSU softball team defeated Ferris State 2-1 in nine innings to win the 2026 GLIAC Tournament Championship, advancing to the NCAA Division II Midwest Regionals. The Cardinals (37-14) became the second team in GLIAC history to win five-straight tournament titles.
The team defeated Ashland 5-2 on Thursday, May 14, in the first NCAA Division II Midwest Regional matchup. They fell to the University of Indianapolis today, May 15, and will play the winner of the 1:30 p.m. matchup between Tiffin and Ashland in an elimination game at 4:00 p.m.

Moon Shot: SVSU Lunabotics Aiming High
|
SVSU’s Lunabotics Club has been re-energized and is once more setting its sights on the moon ... or a facsimile of its surface. The team was one of 50 higher education teams in the United States to qualify for the NASA Lunabotics Challenge. The multidisciplinary team of students from electrical engineering, computer engineering, mechanical engineering and computer science has fabricated and programmed a prototype off-world construction robot.
A small contingent is participating in the Qualifying Challenge at the University of Central Florida, Florida Space Institute’s Exolith® Lab through Sunday, May 17. Participating teams must guide their robots to scoop up simulated regolith (loose, fragmented material on the lunar surface) and deposit it on a berm. Today marked the first official competition day, and the SVSU robot earned valuable competition points!
Watch today’s run in a livestream recording (timestamp 2:35:45). Successful teams advance to the KSC Lunabotics Challenge from Tuesday, May 19, through Friday, May 22.
