Tapp Jaksa to Lead AACTE Board

Anne Tapp Jaksa, professor of teacher education, has been selected to chair of the board of directors of AACTE (American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education) for 2025-26. She has served on the organization’s board since 2021.
In her role as board chair, Tapp Jaksa will share responsibility for prioritizing AACTE’s commitment to advancing educator preparation with Cheryl Holcomb-McCoy, AACTE president and CEO. AACTE represents over 800 postsecondary institutions, offering programs and resources to enhance the quality of teacher preparation and continuing professional development.
“Anne is a dedicated advocate for teacher education, a respected research, and a leader who has consistently championed inclusion and innovation in our field,” Holcomb-McCoy said. “Her passion and expertise will be invaluable as we continue our mission to advance educator preparation and address the pressing challenges in education today.”

SVSU Students Talk a Great Game
|
SVSU students recently made strong showings in two competitive speech tournaments.
On Saturday, Feb. 15, six students captured third place in the Michigan Intercollegiate Speech League Novice State Championship hosted by Northwood University.
On Saturday, March 1, 11 SVSU students traveled to Eastern Michigan University for the MISL State Championship, placing third for the third consecutive year.
Next up, SVSU travels to Bradley University for the first of two in-person national tournaments. Bradley University will host the National Speech Championship Friday and Saturday, March 21-23. Next month, the team travels to Wayne State University for the National Forensics Association National Tournament, Thursday, April 17 to Monday, April 21, where SVSU looks to defend their National Title in President’s Division 3.
Two Cardinal speakers, Nimnan Wuyep,a communication and international studies major from Jos, Nigeria, and Emily Drzewicki, a communication major from Bay City, will represent Michigan in the Interstate Oratory Competition, which will be held Saturday and Sunday, April 26 and 27, at Tennessee State University. This is the first time both Michigan representatives are SVSU students.

Explore the Future of Artificial Intelligence

Inspired by National AI Literacy Day, the Zahnow Library will host SVSU's first AI Literacy Week Monday, March 24-Friday, March 28. Events and activities throughout the week are designed to raise awareness and explore the rapidly evolving world of artificial intelligence.

- Film screening of "The Thinking Game": This documentary follows Demis Hassabis, CEO of DeepMind Technologies, and his pursuit to demystify artificial intelligence. Monday, March 24, Z-111. Two showings: 1-3 p.m. and 4-7 p.m.
- Panel discussion, "The Age of AI: Tools, Ethics and the Future Ahead": Kyle Bylin, research and assessment librarian, hosts panelists Kim Lacey, professor of English, and Peter Rose-Barry, Finkbeiner Endowed Professor of Ethics, in a practical discussion about the using AI. Workday Platform is going live on Sunday, March 23. We've now added a MySVSU Workday Training Curriculum page where you will review your role(s) in Workday, view your training curriculum and register for training courses.

SVSU Swim and Dive at NCAA DII Championships
|
The SVSU swimming and diving program is competing at the NCAA Division II swimming and diving championships, taking place at Indiana University Natatorium in Indianapolis through Saturday, March 15.
On Wednesday, SVSU took part in the 1000-yard freestyle, with Benjamin Wainman finishing 13th and Alexa Hieber 18th.
On Thursday, Alvaro Rodriguez made his NCAA DII Championships debut in the 100-yard butterfly.
Friday, Rodriguez will swim the 200-yard butterfly; Wainman and Hieber will compete in the 500-yard freestyle.

Golfers Have Strong Showings
|
SVSU’s men's and women's golf programs played in the Davis & Elkins Battle at Brunswick in Calabash, North Carolina, Friday, March 7 and Saturday, March 8.
The women’s team of Megan Thiravong, Brook Herbstreit, Andie Martin, Hannah Hauser and Christina Nagy finished first out of 10 teams, with Thiravong capturing the top individual spot.
The men’s golf program took second place at the tournament, with Shea Harmeson placing first of 92 golfers. Others on the team included Jiseung Choi, Thomas Keyte, Joey Per and Dominic DeLaura.
