Board to Vote on Operating Budget, Other Items

The SVSU Board of Control will meet on Monday, June 16, at 1:30 p.m. Faculty and staff are encouraged to attend the meeting, which will be held in Wickes Hall 350. The meeting will also be livestreamed.
Among the items the board will vote on are the general fund operating budget and tuition and fees rates for FY2026, which includes the adoption of block tuition.
A reception to acknowledge the service of JoAnn Crary and Lindsay Stevens Eggers will immediately follow the meeting.

Cardinals Represent at Miss Michigan Pageant
|
Saginaw Valley State University is well represented in the 2025 Miss Michigan competition, taking place through Saturday, June 14, in Muskegon. Three women with ties to SVSU are among the 22 Miss Michigan contestants who will compete for scholarships and the chance to represent the state in the Miss America pageant.

- Ashley Cetnarowski, who holds the title of Miss Heart of Michigan, is an elementary and special education major from East Jordan. Her service initiative, “She Is Her Own Hero,” is centered on youth empowerment and learning from failure.
- Maddison Hubbert, Miss Flat River Heritage 2025, is a public health major from Belding who is completing her final degree requirements. Her platform, “Today’s Youth, Tomorrow’s Future,” advocates for youth leadership and focuses on helping young people grow confidence and the skills to be leaders in their communities.
- Samantha Pickelman, Miss Saginaw County, graduated in May with a general studies degree and is from Auburn. Her platform, “Memories Matter,” focuses on support, education and compassion for individuals and families affected by Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.

The Office of Diversity Programs, the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs and the Black studies program invite the campus community to join in celebrating Juneteenth, honoring the end of enslavement in the United States.

Saginaw Valley State University recognized seven area nurses for their dedication and leadership during the 14th annual Carleen K. Moore Nursing Excellence Award Luncheon. The event took place on Thursday, June 12, 2025 on the SVSU campus.
The nursing awards were established through Terry and Carleen K. Moore as a gift, and it honors nurses across a range of specialties: including acute care, education and community nursing. Carleen Moore worked as a nurse for more than two decades. Her husband, Terry, created the award to recognize the commitment and compassion of nurses.

To celebrate Earth Day, the Support Staff Association organized its first campuswide cleanup initiative. Thirty-one SSA members, students and an AP staff member collected litter around campus, particularly in the wooded area behind Parking Lot F. The event provided SSA members with an opportunity to collaborate with students to celebrate the planet and promote a cleaner environment for everyone.

Enter your goals into Workday by June 30
|
As part of the transition to Workday, all employees must enter their goals into the Workday Talent and Performance platform. If you currently have goals in ASCEND, you can copy and paste those goals into Workday. The ASCEND platform will be discontinued on Monday, June 30.

Athletics Announces Hall of Fame Inductees
|
Saginaw Valley State University Athletics is proud to announce the 2025 Hall of Fame Class that will be inducted on Friday, Sept. 5. This year's class features four student-athletes, one team, and two contributors.
The 2025 SVSU Athletic Hall of Fame Class student-athlete inductees are Andrea (Kieser) Bergdolt (Track & Field), Tim Goheen (Baseball), Todd Herremans (Football), and Lydia Mattar (Swim & Dive). The team for the 2025 class is the 1983 women's indoor track & field team. The two contributors are Dr. James Jesko, D.O., and Jim Dwyer.

Cardinals Recognized for Academic Excellence

SVSU student-athletes stand out in the classroom as well as in competition. The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference has recognized 490 Cardinals with All-Academic and All-Excellence awards for the 2024-2025 academic year.

Schalk Enters Hall of Fame
|
Ryan Schalk, head softball coach, has been named to the Muskegon Area Sports Hall of Fame as a member of the coaching staff for the 2010 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II National Champion Muskegon Community College.
Recently, Schalk was named the GLIAC Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season, and he and the SVSU softball coaching staff were named the 2025 ATEC/NFCA Midwest Coaching Staff of the Year.
