SVSU Moot Court Duo Reaches New Heights
|
The team of Nik Baker and Diva Patel have set a new record for SVSU’s moot court program, placing fifth at the final round of the American Moot Court Association’s national tournament, which was held at Texas Tech Law School in Lubbock Feb. 14-15.
Baker, a political science major from Pinconning, and Patel, a December 2024 graduate (biology and political science) from Kawkawlin, qualified for the final round after competing in the preliminary rounds of the national tournament in January. SVSU’s moot court program was ranked No. 9 in the nation entering this year’s competition.
In addition to Baker and Patel’s success in the oral arguments competition, three SVSU teams already have received national recognition for their written appellate briefs:
|
- Owen Bacigalupo, a sociology major from Bay City, and Noah Johnson, a political science major from Lake Orion, placed fourth with their respondent brief.
- Ethan Rose, a political science major from Ypsilanti, and Payton Stemmerich, a Spanish major from Clinton Township, placed sixth for their petitioner brief.
- Baker and Patel placed 12th for their respondent brief.
|
Final results of the brief writing competition are not yet complete. SVSU’s team is coached by Kevin Lorentz II, assistant professor of political science, and Amy Hendrickson, associate professor of law.

The campus community is invited to a town hall meeting on Thursday, Feb. 27, from 4-5 p.m. in the Rhea Miller Recital Hall to learn more about SVSU’s strategic plan for 2025-2030. The town hall will also be live streamed; a link will be shared prior to the event.
In December, the SVSU Board of Control accepted the 2025-2030 SVSU strategic plan framework. Since then, planning teams have been working to define priorities and strategies and will share those during the meeting.
