SVSU Recognized at National Speech Championship

Saginaw Valley State University made a strong showing at the National Speech Championship. Four students represented SVSU, placing 7th overall, matching last season’s performance at the event.

- Emily Drzewicki, a communication major from Bay City, advanced to semifinals in Persuasion.
- Xsandrie Guimba, an exercise science major from Metro Manila, Philippines, advanced to the quarterfinal round in Extemporaneous Speaking.
- Riley Romer, an international studies and Spanish major from Macomb, also advanced to the quarterfinal round in Extemporaneous Speaking.
- Nimnan Wuyep, a communication and international studies major from Jos, Nigeria, placed third in Poetry and Dramatic Interpretation and fifth in Impromptu. He also advanced to semifinals in Prose, Persuasion, and Interviewing. Wuyep placed second overall during the NSC season.

In addition, Ryan Rigda, lecturer of communication and one of the team’s coaches, was named National Speech Championship Coach of the Year. Rigda was selected for his commitment to forensics as an activity, in general, and his mentorship and coaching for the SVSU team, in particular.
The team will travel to Wayne State April 17-21 for the National Forensics Association Championship Tournament.

Professor Recognized by Red Cross
|
David Berry, a professor kinesiology, has received the Presidential Award for Excellence by the American Red Cross for his work with the Scientific Advisory Council for the American Red Cross.
The Presidential Award for Excellence is presented to an individual or group of Red Cross employees or volunteers who demonstrate exceptional performance or service in support of the Red Cross's multi-faceted mission.
Berry was recognized for his service as part of an 18-member of the American Red Cross Scientific Advisory Council – First Aid Task Force. This group of volunteer experts provide science-based advice on topics like first aid, aquatics, resuscitation, disaster health and emergency preparedness, ensuring that Red Cross programs and guidelines are based on the latest evidence.

Thorns Recognized by Rotary Club of Saginaw Valley
|
The Rotary Club of Saginaw Valley named Mamie Thorns, vice president for diversity, equity and inclusion, its 2025 Hero in recognition of her standout service and dedication to the Rotary Club and the broader community.
A devoted member of Rotary for 35 years, Thorns is a past president of the Rotary Club of Saginaw Valley and a distinguished Paul Harris Fellow. She has exemplified the Rotary motto, “Service Above Self.”

Walk/Run in Memory of Rachel Darr
|
The SVSU kinesiology department will wrap up its latest walking program with a 5k color walk/run in memory of Rachel Darr, associate professor of kinesiology, who passed away in October. The event takes place tomorrow, April 12.
A portion of the $12 event fee will be directed to a scholarship fund for Rachel's three children.
Registration opens at 8:30 a.m. A 1k for kids begins at 9 a.m.; the 5k follows at 9:15. The walk/run will use the certified 9/11 Heroes Run 5K course, with the start/finish at the north end of Ryder Center. Parking will be available in the lot adjacent to Ryder.

On March 19, Jason Jaime, field education coordinator, accompanied SVSU social work students to Lansing to attend Capitol Action Day, NASW-Michigan’s annual advocacy event. The purpose of the event is to enable social work students and professionals to advocate for the policies that will help them provide better services to their communities.
Participants visited legislators and engaged with staffers on key issues affecting the social work profession. A large portion of the afternoon was spent in the Binsfield Office Building, meeting with staff from several state senators’ offices.
The National Association of Social Workers is the largest membership organization of professional social workers in the world.

The Workday team has received several reports from SVSU employees who signed up for direct deposit but have not yet received their payment.
Please review your pay slip to verify how your payment was issued. Refer to page 3 of the Manage Employee Pay Profile job aid (located in MySVSU) for step-by-step instructions for accessing your pay slip. At the bottom of your pay slip, it will indicate either CHECK or YOUR BANK ACCOUNT.
If your pay slip says CHECK, your check was mailed Thursday morning to the address on file. It should arrive soon. If you cannot wait, please contact payroll@svsu.edu to request a reissue.
If your pay slip shows YOUR BANK ACCOUNT and you have not received your payment by Wednesday, April 16, please reach out to payroll@svsu.edu for further assistance.

The Saginaw Valley State University softball team have now swept six-straight conference opponents for a 12-game winning streak and sit firmly atop the league standings with a 15-1 mark.

SVSU’s men's golf team competed in the Findianapolis Intercollegiate, hosted by Findlay and Indianapolis, playing three rounds at Chariot Run Golf Course in Laconia, Indiana, on Monday and Tuesday.
Evan Klein led the Cardinals, finishing second out of 52 golfers at four under par over three rounds—just one stroke behind the leader. The team tied for second place with UIndy out of 10 teams, shooting +12 overall and finishing ahead of four top-50 programs.
The women's golf team competed in two rounds of the NC4K Classic hosted by Ohio Dominican on Monday and Tuesday. The Cardinals placed seventh out of 16 teams with a total score of 650 strokes at Pinnacle Country Club.
Brook Herbstreit led the tournament after the first round and ultimately finished tied for second out of 97 golfers. She recorded rounds of 71 (-1) and 80 (+8) for a total score of 151 (+7), just one stroke behind the leader.
