Prospective Students

Thank you for your interest in SVSU Theatre, and Welcome!

My name is Tommy Wedge, Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Theatre here at Saginaw Valley State University.  I know that deciding on your college career can be stressful and with the deluge of information from different programs, perhaps a bit overwhelming. I’ve found the best way to get to choose programs is to see for yourself: by shadowing a theatre class or two, sitting in on a production meeting, observing a rehearsal, or seeing one of our live productions. I can help you set that up, connect you with current students, or just generally be a resource.

I want to also let you know that in addition to any academic scholarship offers you may have received from SVSU, we have private theatre talent scholarships available.  These theatre scholarships are awarded by audition/interview depending on your area of focus.

  • If auditioning as an actor, you would perform two pieces: either two contrasting one-minute monologues, or a single one-minute monologue and 32 bars of a musical theatre song.
  • If auditioning for design, technology, or management, please share a portfolio of your work and prepare a brief presentation highlighting your achievements.
  • The audition or interview will be followed by a brief conversation with the theatre faculty where we can get to know you, and you can ask follow-up questions about our program.
  • All auditioners should present a resume that includes their current cumulative GPA.

For theatre scholarships beginning the 26/27 year, we are holding auditions on two dates: one at SVSU on Thursday, Dec. 4 starting at 5pm, and one at Lansing at the Michigan Thespian Festival Dec 12-13. If you cannot attend one of the in-person auditions, we also accept virtual auditions. Scholarship offers will be sent via the email address on your resume on Saturday, Dec 13.

If you would like to audition/interview for a scholarship, please let me know and we’ll get you scheduled.

I’m incredibly impressed and proud of the students in our program, and I hope to see you join them next year. If you have any questions about our department, or SVSU in general, please don't hesitate to email or call.

All my best and hoping to see you soon,
