Theatre: Experience Art in Action

At SVSU, our liberal-arts based Theatre program provides opportunities to develop creative talents through both study and hands-on application. Our flexible curriculum allows students to tailor their degree: they may concentrate in a specific discipline such as performance, design/technology, directing or pursue a broad theatre-generalist track.

Throughout the program, students cultivate essential professional skills including collaboration, communication, creative problem-solving, and critical thinking. Our four annual live theatrical productions serve not only as a training ground for these skills, but also as a source of enrichment for the university and surrounding community.

Opportunities for Theatre Students

  • In addition to merit-based academic scholarships, The Department of Theatre offers private talent scholarships by audition/interview.
  • Hands-on training in specialized theatrical courses—including the Mini Light Lab, Commedia dell’arte, stage combat—to develop both technical expertise and physical storytelling skills.
  • Students can deepen their involvement through a Musical Theatre Minor or by joining Resident Student Organizations such as Back ‘n Progress for improvisation or Alpha Psi Omega, the national theatre honor society.
