Coming March 20th and 21st!

RISE: Resiliency in Students & Educators

The Saginaw Valley State University RISE framework is a multidisciplinary training and coaching model designed to strengthen school-wide resiliency. Participants will increase both knowledge and application techniques in supporting student and educator well-being, learning and growth; directly increasing academic scores and decreasing behavior referrals and suspensions.

Classrooms report increases in the severity and frequency of challenging behavior. School systems grapple with high rates of teacher attrition. It’s a difficult time in Education.

The Resiliency in Students and Educators (RISE) Summit addresses these issues and the needs shared by local schools with SVSU. RISE Summit sessions are designed to guide understanding around the complexities of toxic stress and trauma exposure while providing strategies to improve outcomes. The RISE Summit is built on a multi-disciplinary system that weaves together education, health, and community partnerships.

Join us.

We encourage teachers and administrators to attend in groups or individually. The application of the information presented will be supported in both classroom environments and school-wide systems. Come explore how to address your unique school needs.

Resources Through Coaching

  • Instructional Coaching: A RISE team member will come alongside you in order to better understand how the professional learning information can be applied within your classroom or service, support you in applying strategies that you feel your students would benefit from and collaborate with you on student-specific needs or resources.
  • Well-Bean Classroom Mindfulness: We can’t change what we aren’t aware of. Once a week, for 20 minutes a day for 8 weeks, a Well-Bean instructor will lead mindfulness for you and your students. Together, you and your students will be practicing the power of attunement, breath, and self-regulation by understanding how the brain works.
  • Structured Reflection: We understand that you are more than your work, and therefore, this work can begin to influence personal well-being. In small groups, you will have the opportunity to reflect, dissect, and connect in a safe, non-judgmental format regarding the issues you face daily. This practice of processing the many aspects of your work and how to prioritize your own well-being is proven to improve professional resiliency and job satisfaction. Your reflections will be led by an experienced professional and will be kept confidential.

Foundations for Resilience in Students and Educators

  • Science: This is brain-driven. The statistics are profound: trauma and toxic stress literally change our brains, bodies and biology, even when we don’t recognize or remember the events or influences.
  • Systems: This is a complete network. Enduring resiliency must be founded in a whole-person approach that understands the connectedness of the well-being of physical, emotional, relational, spiritual and mental health.
  • Relationships: This is not another thing to do; this is who we are. Genuine, healthy connections are foundational in supporting positive social-emotional development in children, are critical in lowering educator burnout rates, and are key for the teaching and learning dynamic.
  • Self-care: We can’t give what we don’t have. The constant demands within the high-paced environment of schools make the practice of being attuned to yourself nearly impossible. If educators are consistently supporting students of trauma and toxic stress backgrounds, they will quickly become at risk for secondary traumatic stress disorder, compassion fatigue and burnout.
  • Policy and Advocacy: This is a call to action. Participants will gain clarity in areas such as seclusion and restraint laws, be briefed on current initiatives occurring at state and federal levels and have opportunities to share experiences with others

Participants in the RISE Summit will increase both knowledge and application techniques in addressing the academic, social, and behavioral issues brought about from exposure to toxic stress. The Summit aims to offer an evidence-based framework and a guide to practical approaches that are all guided by the RISE Schoolwide Assessment. Interested educators, administrators, community agencies, and teacher educators are all welcome to register.
