Littell has an MFA from Cranbrook and was trained as a painter. However, photography has always been part of his life. From working curatorially, to travels, to newspaper work his varied career has not only made him a valued area educator but a respected photographer. When talking to Dave about his work he has always been hesitant to classify these types of images. The work is highly influenced by the natural world and he approaches his creative photography like a painter. The use of the digital platform allows him to add the element of a painters touch sometimes quite subtly. They are never really just photographs, and they aren’t just paintings either.
