Small Treasures, detail
Reiter began Ebullient as a solo art exhibition in November, 2021, at the Mott Community College in Flint. As a body of work, Ebullient still stands full of optimism, perseverance, creative energy and enthusiasm. In January, 2023, she suffered a devasting personal loss and art making embodies, for her, carrying on due to loss. Ebullient currently, in 2024, continues to focus on moving forward in growth and colorful resilience. She offers up confidence and hope that in spite of our great losses, selective joys exist in our lives, if we carefully discern their nuances.
Reiter makes art using mixed media collage with paper, fabric, fiber, beads, ephemera and more. The collages often incorporate recycled and repurposed materials to give them a new life. As a librarian, she enjoys utilizing bits and pieces of books and magazines into her collages. Drawing and stitching (by hand and machine) bring additional tactile details to the work. As a visual artist, she always searchs for that deep joy and satisfaction of completing a successful piece. The creative challenge for her is to discover dynamic mixtures of contrasting elements, providing unexpected visual surprises.
The viewer can enjoy the colorful layers of pattern, texture and shape in her work. The raw and rough edges convey spontaneity and an exuberant process. Lastly, the art suggests stories, memories or personal associations to each individual viewer.
For Jane Reiter, art is provocative, mind boggling, limitless, fun and life saving. Welcome to her version of the universe.
