The Materials Lab supports instruction for the Introduction to Materials Science and Engineering Analysis courses. It also supports student projects, plus faculty and student research. This lab is about manipulating material structures and conducting various tests using heat treating furnaces, a Charpy-Izod Impact tester, and a hydraulic fatigue-testing frame capable of applying 20,000 pounds of force (20 KIP). The equipment used in this lab is for heat treating metals, ductile-to-brittle transitions in materials, nondestructive testing (NDE), and data evaluation. The Independent Testing Lab also uses this equipment to conduct experiments for their clients.

Equipment

  • Medium and small box furnaces with air atmospheres
  • Hot plate
  • Liquid nitrogen dewars
  • Charpy Impact test machine
  • Hydraulic press
  • Two MTS hydraulic test frames for tensile, flexure, and fatigue testing
  • Safety shower and eyewash
  • Fume hood
  • Ultrasonic inspection system for Non-destructive Evaluation lab in ME250
