Cynt Marshall to Deliver Keynote at MLK Jr. Celebration

The Great Lakes Bay Region will honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during the annual Great Lakes Bay Region Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration on Thursday, Jan. 22, at 7 p.m. in the Malcolm Field Theatre for Performing Arts inside Curtiss Hall at Saginaw Valley State University.
This year’s event will feature a keynote address by Cynthia “Cynt” Marshall, former CEO of the Dallas Mavericks and president and CEO of Marshalling Resources, a consulting firm specializing in leadership development, culture transformation and optimization of people resources.

The SVSU campus community is invited to participate in the 30th annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Unity March Monday, Jan. 19. The event is organized by Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and Delta College Black Faculty and Staff Association.
Participants for the march will gather at 9:45 a.m. at the corner of Franklin and Hayden streets in downtown Saginaw and walk to The Dow Event Center.

Students Qualify for Speech Championship
|
Early in the 2025-2026 competitive speaking season, six SVSU students have already qualified for the National Forensic Association National Championship Tournament, which will be held in April. The students earned their championship spots during the fall Michigan Intercollegiate Speech League (MISL) tournament in December, hosted by SVSU.
Cardinals who qualified for the tournament include:

- Emily Drzewicki, a communication major from Bay City
- Cody Power, a political science major from New Baltimore
- Hannah Schalk, an elementary education major from Reese
- McKenzie Shagena, a political science major from Fort Gratiot
- Nicole Yapp, an elementary education major from Wixom

Other SVSU students who contributed to SVSU's first-place finish in the fall MISL tournament are Ava Cannon, a nursing major from Clio; Maia Clynick, a psychology major from Bay City; Zachary Duffet, a social work major from Birch Run; and Ethan Jennings, a communication major from Marquette.

Campus Recreation invites faculty and staff to join on a lunchtime walk every Wednesday beginning at 12:15 p.m.
Put on comfortable shoes and meet at the south entrance to Wickes Hall (accessible by the President's Courtyard). The walk takes place indoors and takes about 20 minutes.

Engle Named Head Football Coach
|
Michael Engle, who has established himself as one of the top offensive coordinators in NCAA Division II, has been selected as the next head football coach at Saginaw Valley State University. He takes over the Cardinal program after spending the past four seasons at UIndy.

SVSU track and field hosts the SVSU Classes indoor track and field meet on Friday, Jan. 16, at 2:30 p.m. The team hosts the Doug Hansen Open on Friday, Jan. 23.
The women's basketball team hosts Northern Michigan at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 17. The men meet the Wildcats on the court at 3 p.m. The teams host Lake Superior State on Thursday, Jan. 22.
SVSU swimming and diving travels to East Grand Rapids to compete against Albion/Aquinas on Saturday, Jan. 17.
