SVSU to Celebrate Graduates

Over 500 Saginaw Valley State University students are preparing to receive their degrees. SVSU will celebrate the fall 2025 graduates during two commencement ceremonies on Saturday, Dec. 13, in the Ryder Center.
The first ceremony, at 10 a.m., will recognize graduates from the College of Arts and Behavioral Sciences, the Scott L. Carmona College of Business and the College of Science, Engineering and Technology. Suzanne Greenberg, executive director of Children Trust Michigan, will deliver the commencement address. At 2:30 p.m., degrees will be conferred upon graduates from the College of Education and the Crystal M. Lange College of Health and Human Services. Dr. Ramont M. Roberts, superintendent of Saginaw Public Schools, will deliver remarks. The ceremony will be livestreamed here.

Moot Court Orators Stand Out
|
Saginaw Valley State University’s moot court team delivered an exceptional performance at the American Moot Court Association’s Midwest Regional Tournament, held November 21-22 at the College of Wooster in Wooster, Ohio. Four SVSU teams were among the 30 competing in the contest.
SVSU’s competitors stood out in individual orator rankings, with four Cardinals sweeping the top four spots:

- First place — Owen Bacigalupo, a sociology major from Bay City
- Second place — Payton Stemmerich, a Spanish major from Clinton Township
- Third place — Noah Johnson, a political science major from Lake Orion
- Fourth place — Jason Hoang, a political science major from Saginaw

Alumni Association Honors Standout Alumni
|
The Saginaw Valley State University Alumni Association recently honored seven alumni during the 2025 Distinguished Alumni Celebration.
Five individuals, representing each of SVSU's academic colleges, were selected for a Distinguished Alumni Award. They are: • Ellen Rodman for the College of Arts & Behavioral Sciences • Marcia Thomas for the Scott L. Carmona College of Business • Leland Jennings for the College of Education • Marissa Palmer, D.N.P., R.N., for the Crystal M. Lange College of Health & Human Services • Dr. Jolynne Grant for the College of Science, Engineering & Technology
The SVSU Alumni Association also recognized two other honorees. Bethany Alford received the Veteran Alumni Award, and Nancy Haddad Derleth received the GOLD (Graduate Of the Last Decade) Alumni Award.

Cynt Marshall to Deliver Keynote at MLK Jr. Celebration
|
The Great Lakes Bay Region will honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during the annual Great Lakes Bay Region Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration on Thursday, Jan. 22, 2026, at 7 p.m. in the Malcolm Field Theatre for Performing Arts inside Curtiss Hall at Saginaw Valley State University.
This year’s event will feature a keynote address by Cynthia “Cynt” Marshall, president and CEO of Marshalling Resources, a consulting firm specializing in leadership development, culture transformation and optimization of people resources.

SVSU Selects 19th Cohort of Gerstacker Fellows
|
Saginaw Valley State University introduced 10 K-12 education leaders from across Michigan as the newest members of the Gerstacker Fellowship Program during the program’s annual symposium at SVSU in November.
The Gerstacker Fellowship prepares school administrators, instructional specialists and district-level leaders for the complex challenges of educational leadership. Throughout the yearlong program, fellows meet regularly for intensive workshops and seminars focused on leadership development, organizational culture, communication, educational policy and global perspectives on schooling.

Spencer Recognized for Service
|
Kal Spencer, study abroad coordinator, was praised by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs for their service to the selection panels for the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program.
The Gilman Program supports American undergraduate students of limited financial means to study or intern abroad and, since 2001, has enabled more than 49,000 outstanding Americans of diverse backgrounds to engage in a meaningful educational experience abroad in 160 countries.

Over 100 participants walked in the second annual indoor Jingle Bell 5K on Wednesday, Dec. 3.
Bachand Hall and Gilbertson Hall were decked out for the holiday event, which was coordinated by Gena Guerin’s KINE 350 Exercise is Medicine students. Members of Cardinal Singers opened the event with holiday carols, and there was a special appearance by Santa and Buddy the Elf.
Various student clubs decorated for the event, competing for prizes. The Pre-Physical Therapy Club took top honors, as judged by Lisa Krissoff Boehm, provost and vice president for academic and student affairs.

Helping students achieve their dreams of a college degree takes every one of us — faculty, adjuncts and staff.
To recognize the essential role employees play, the SVSU Foundation will enter all 2025-2026 employee donors into a monthly prize drawing, with one winner randomly selected each month.
The December winner is Brooks Byam, professor of mechanical engineering. Brooks will receive a Winter Warm-Up package that includes a Cardinal winter cap and an SVSU mug with hot chocolate!
Everyone who has made a gift of $10 or more by Dec 31 will be entered in the January drawing for a $50 Meijer gift card to help with essentials, courtesy of an anonymous donor.

SVSU women’s soccer player Madi Bajis was named a second team All-American by the Division II Conference Commissioners Association. She was matched on the men’s side by Kolja Thomas, who also earned second team All-American honors.
In addition, three members of the SVSU men's soccer team were named to United Soccer Coaches All-Midwest Region Second Team. They are Kolja Thomas of Butjadingen, Germany, Liam Zimmerman of Clarkston and Matty Telfer of Newcastle, England.
The men’s basketball team hosts Kuyper at 6 p.m. next Tuesday, Dec. 16, in O’Neill Arena. The women host Walsh at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 17. The teams return to home action on Saturday, Dec. 20, when the women host Hillsdale at 1 p.m. and the men host Northwood at 7 p.m.
