Saginaw Valley State University’s logo trademark licensing program ensures the responsible use of SVSU’s logos and name to protect the university’s brand identity.

Any item featuring SVSU-branded marks must be produced by an officially licensed vendor, regardless of whether the item is intended for resale. Businesses, organizations and individuals seeking to use the SVSU name or trademarks on promotional items must obtain proper licensing first.

Saginaw Valley State University (SVSU) Photography and Videography Policy

Saginaw Valley State University’s Office of University Communications is dedicated to capturing the vibrant campus life through photography and videography. These images and videos are essential in showcasing the university's dynamic community and educational activities. This policy outlines our approach to photography and videography on campus, emphasizing our legal rights to capture images in public spaces without explicit consent.

Policy Overview

• Public Spaces: SVSU has the legal right to photograph and record videos in public campus areas without the need for signed releases. Public spaces include outdoor areas, common rooms, and public events where individuals do not have a reasonable expectation of privacy.
• Use of Media: The media captured in these public spaces is used for non-commercial purposes, such as promoting the university, highlighting student life, and sharing news about campus activities. These uses align with our educational and community-building mission and do not include direct commercial profit.

Guidelines for Photography and Videography

• No Consent Required in Public Spaces: In line with legal standards, consent is not required for individuals photographed or filmed in public spaces at SVSU. This includes general scenes of campus life, university events, and other activities where the community is openly engaged.
• Verbal Consent in Private Spaces: When photographing or filming in locations where individuals have a reasonable expectation of privacy, such as classrooms, student housing, or private offices, SVSU will obtain verbal consent from all identifiable subjects. This practice ensures respect for the privacy and comfort of our community members while still allowing for the documentation of educational and campus life.
• Educational and Promotional Use: Images and videos are primarily used for educational and promotional purposes. They may appear in, but are not limited to, university publications, digital platforms, and promotional materials intended to inform and engage our current and prospective students and the broader community.

Ensuring Respect and Sensitivity

• Respecting Preferences: While formal consent is not required in public spaces, SVSU is committed to handling all photography and videography with sensitivity and respect for individual preferences. If an individual expresses discomfort or opts out of being photographed, we strive to accommodate their wishes whenever practicable.
• Notice of Filming: Whenever possible, SVSU will provide notice when extensive filming or photography is scheduled to take place on campus, allowing those who wish to avoid participation to do so.

Saginaw Valley State University (SVSU) Drone Use Policy 5.2-8

1. Purpose
This policy establishes regulations for the operation of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS), commonly known as drones, to ensure the safety, privacy, and security of the SVSU community and property.

2. Scope
This policy applies to all individuals, including students, faculty, staff, contractors, and visitors, who wish to operate drones on or above SVSU property.

3. General Policy

• The operation, takeoff, or landing of drones shall not create a hazard to University-owned property, the University community, or the public at any time. UAS may not be operated in a way that disrupts instruction or unduly affects the environment of people in, or passing through, a common space, those working or studying within a building, or those entering, exiting or otherwise making their way about a facility.
• UA may not be operated inside university buildings unless written permission is received from the Office of Administration and Business Affairs (ABA).
• Authorized drone operations without prior authorization are permitted for:
  
  • SVSU Police Department: For law enforcement and emergency response.
  • University Communications: For official university marketing, photography, and videography.
  • Academic and Research Activities: Conducted by SVSU faculty, staff, or students as part of university-sanctioned programs.
• Approval for Other Uses: Any other drone operations by outside companies for commercial or news gathering purposes must receive prior written approval from the Office of Administration and Business Affairs (ABA).
  
  

4. Approval Process

• Request Submission: Individuals or entities seeking approval must submit a detailed request at least 24 hours prior to the intended operation date. The request should include:
  • Purpose of the drone operation.
  • Date, time, and specific location of the flight.
  • Equipment specifications.
  • Pilot credentials, including FAA certifications.
  • Proof of liability insurance, naming SVSU as an additional insured party.
• Review Authority: The Office of Administration and Business Affairs (ABA) is responsible for reviewing and approving drone operation requests. They will coordinate with relevant departments to assess safety, privacy, and compliance considerations.

5. Operational Requirements
Approved drone operations must adhere to the following:

• Compliance: All operations must comply with FAA regulations, state and local laws, and SVSU policies.
• Pilot Certification: Operators must possess a valid FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate.
• Insurance: Operators must maintain liability insurance with a minimum coverage of $2 million, naming SVSU as an additional insured.
• Flight Restrictions for all operations:
  • Drones must not fly over people, stadiums, or during events without explicit permission.
  • Operations are restricted to daylight hours unless a night operation waiver is obtained.
  • Drones must remain within the visual line of sight of the operator at all times.
• Privacy: Operators must avoid capturing images or data in areas where there is a reasonable expectation of privacy, such as residence halls, restrooms, and private offices.

6. Enforcement

• Violations: Unauthorized or careless drone operations may result in:
  • Immediate cessation of the flight.
  • Confiscation of equipment.
  • Referral to campus, local, state or federal law enforcement for action consistent with federal and state law.
  • Legal action, including trespassing charges and fines.

7. Policy Review
This policy will be reviewed annually by the Office of Administration and Business Affairs (ABA) to ensure compliance with evolving laws and technologies.

University Communications, through its media relations office, serves as the primary liaison between SVSU and the news media. We strive to enhance public awareness of the university by promoting its achievements, programs, and events of interest to the community and the press. To request a news release, please email media@svsu.edu and u-comm@svsu.edu at least two weeks prior to your event. Be sure to include the essential details: who, what, when, where, why, and how.

We are also happy to assist journalists or reporters seeking information on SVSU policies or looking for expert commentary from faculty or staff. 

If you have news of a noteworthy accomplishment or an event you’d like publicized, please get in touch with our team as early as possible — timeliness is key to effective media coverage.

To help ensure an accurate representation of SVSU, it is essential that all information shared with the news media is factual and reliable. Members of the university community are expected to verify the accuracy of any details they provide. If you are uncertain whether you are the appropriate spokesperson for a particular topic, please reach out to University Communications for guidance. 

Tips for Speaking with a Reporter
When engaging with the media, professionalism and preparation are key:

• Start by asking for the reporter’s name, their news outlet, and how you can assist.
• Confirm whether you are the appropriate spokesperson. If not, refer the reporter to the relevant contact or to University Communications.
• Respect tight media deadlines—ask for the reporter’s timeline and communicate promptly if you cannot meet it.
• If contacted unexpectedly, don’t feel pressured to respond immediately. It’s appropriate to request their contact information and schedule a follow-up once you’ve gathered your thoughts or materials.
• For phone interviews, avoid speakerphone and minimize background noise; for TV interviews, maintain eye contact with the reporter rather than the camera, unless directed otherwise.
• Speak clearly and avoid technical jargon. Use concise, direct language, as reporters often use short quotes or sound bites.
• If needed, feel free to rephrase or clarify your response before moving on.
• Most importantly, assume that everything you say may be quoted—share only what you would be comfortable seeing in the news.
