First-Generation Student Spotlight: Gavin Hunter

For Gavin Hunter, being a first-generation college student has been both exciting and challenging.

A junior majoring in Secondary Social Studies Education, Gavin came to SVSU after completing two years of dual enrollment at Mid Michigan College. As the first in his family to pursue a bachelor's degree, he's learned how to navigate unfamiliar territory while building a support system that helps him thrive.

"To be first-generation is a double-edged sword," Gavin said. "Yes, I'm the first. Yes, I'm going to create a much better life for myself. Yes, I'm finding myself. But I am also in the complete unknown and have to constantly reach out for community help."

Gavin's passion for education began with an influential high school history teacher who showed him how creative and impactful teaching could be. That experience inspired him to pursue a career in the classroom and become that source of inspiration for future students.

Since arriving at SVSU, Gavin has found support through campus resources such as TRIO, Mental Health & Wellness services, supportive coworkers, and a close network of friends and family. He credits these connections with helping him navigate the challenges many first-generation students face.

One of those challenges has been balancing the realities of commuting to campus to save money. When transportation issues threatened to disrupt his studies, friends and family stepped up to help him stay on track.

Among his proudest accomplishments at SVSU is being selected for the 2026 Homecoming Court, an achievement that reflects both his campus involvement and commitment to the Cardinal community.

Outside the classroom, Gavin enjoys being active in student organizations and says the friendships he's built have become one of the most meaningful parts of his college experience.

Looking ahead, Gavin hopes to become a teacher, continue writing, travel, and eventually raise a family of his own. He also hopes his story encourages other students to pursue their goals.

"As long as you have the drive and passion, you can do anything you want," he said. "With a little help, of course."

For future first-generation students, his advice is simple: "Never, and I mean NEVER, be afraid to advocate and communicate for yourself."

As a first-generation student, Gavin says he stands out because he never gave up and always pushed himself to do better.
