Saginaw Valley State University alumnus Erik Gibelyou will return to campus this Friday, Oct. 14 to perform with Trio Ghidorah, a classical guitar trio. The concert is part of the Rhea Miller Concert Series and will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the Rhea Miller Recital Hall. It is free and open to the public.

Gibelyou, who earned a Bachelor of Arts in music from SVSU in 2011, formed Trio Ghidorah with Ken Luk and Bernardo Marcondes while the three were pursuing doctoral degrees at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY. The trio creates arrangements of music not originally written for guitar, including works by Stravinsky, Mozart and Philip Glass.

The group released its debut album, Dances and Fantasies, in March 2021. The recording includes the group’s arrangements alongside works composed for three guitars by Paulo Bellinati, Stephen Dodgson and Annette Kruisbrink.

Gibelyou has served as an adjunct faculty member at his alma mater, teaching classes in music theory, aural skills, musical analysis, world music and applied guitar. He holds a Doctor of Musical Arts in Performance and Literature, along with a performer’s certificate, from the Eastman School of Music.

The Rhea Miller Concert Series is made possible by a generous gift from Rhea E. Miller, a longtime friend of SVSU. Her gift, administered by the Miller Trust for Music Education, has provided the university with the opportunity to offer outstanding performances by nationally and internationally acclaimed musical artists at no cost to the audience since 1993.
