SVSU to host Great Lakes Bay Region candidate forums

Saginaw Valley State University is offering the public an opportunity to hear from candidates vying to represent Michigan’s 8th Congressional District and the 35th State Senate District.

The SVSU College Republicans, College Democrats, and Pi Sigma Alpha in collaboration with the Henry Marsh Institute for Public Policy are hosting candidate forums for the two districts on Monday, Oct. 3 and Monday, Oct. 10 from 6:45 – 8:00 p.m. Both forums will be held in the Rhea Miller Recital Hall in SVSU’s Curtiss Hall. The events are free and open to the public, but tickets are required.

“We are proud to co-host two issue-based civic forums for the Great Lakes Bay Region,” said Stephen Prince, program director for the Henry Marsh Institute for Public Policy and SVSU’s assistant director for university-community relations. “I am thankful to our sponsors, the College Democrats, Republicans, Pi Sigma Alpha, and the moderators and candidates for agreeing that these forums were vital to educating the citizens about their choices prior to election day.” 

The Oct. 3 forum features 8th Congressional District candidates Congressman Dan Kildee (D) and challenger Paul Junge (R). The forum will be moderated by Colette Boyd, WNEM TV5 news anchor, and Chad Livengood, politics editor and columnist at the Detroit News.The 35th State Senate District forum is on Monday, October 10. State Representative Annette Glenn (R) and challenger Bay City Commissioner Kristen McDonald Rivet (D) will answer questions from moderators Terry Camp, a reporter for ABC12, and Zach Gorchow, executive editor and publisher of  Gongwer News Service Michigan.

SVSU students representing SVSU’s College Republicans and College Democrats organizations also are scheduled to make remarks at the forums. Max Copus, a public administration major from Bay City, will represent the SVSU College Democrats, and Dahlia Terry, a pre-law major from Wayland, will speak on behalf of the SVSU College Republicans.
