Registered Student Organizations (RSOs)

RSOs - Registered Student Organizations - are like clubs at SVSU. These are student-led groups, and they each have an advisor to help their organization run smoothly. There is a long list of RSOs a student can be involved with, in a range of categories, including ones that are academic, faith-based, multicultural, service-based, etc. Each RSO will determine what it means to be a member of the organization; the commitment is typically once a week, once every other week, or once a month. We encourage people to explore any RSO that is interesting to them, since organizations can fill different roles in one’s life.

To view a list of RSOs, visit SVSU Engage by clicking here or visiting svsu.campuslabs.com/engage. Once on SVSU Engage, locate the button entitled ‘Organizations’ on the left-hand side of the screen. Once clicked, there will be the long list of RSOs active at SVSU. To look through them, scroll through the list alphabetically, search for a key word in the organization’s name, or use the branch or category filters.

There are a few ways to join an RSO. To start, if one finds an organization they want to join through SVSU Engage, they can send an email to the main contact for the organization, to express interest and seek information on how to join. 

Another option happens at the beginning of each semester: attend an RSO fair. At the beginning of each Fall and Winter semester, there is an event where RSOs have the opportunity to sit at a table, share information about their organization, and encourage people to join them. At these RSO fairs, RSOs will typically either have interested people write down an email so they can send more details at a later time, or communicate an upcoming meeting/event that someone interested in joining can attend. 

The other way to join an RSO is to show up to an event or meeting. Through SVSU Engage and Corq mobile app, as well as through social media and paper fliers around campus, RSOs have the opportunity to encourage people to attend their events and meetings. Someone who sees this information is able to attend and express interest in joining the RSO then.

SVSU students are able to create their own RSOs for nearly any topic they are interested in. Whether it’s an academic, social, art, recreational, sports, food, or any other kind of RSO, you can get it started! 

In order to start an RSO, you need a total of three current SVSU students, yourself included, and an advisor. Your advisor must be any non-student employee of SVSU (i.e. faculty, staff) that agrees to provide support to your RSO. Once you have three students and an advisor, you must draft an RSO constitution stating your RSO’s purpose and detailing how your RSO will operate. 

Next, go to svsu.campuslabs.com/engage and sign in with your SVSU credentials. Once signed in, click the “Organizations” button on the left-hand side of the page, then click “Register an Organization” and then click the “Register a New Organization” button. Follow the steps and submit your new RSO request, then wait to hear from a staff member in Student Life.

Events open to students are always going on around campus. Events can include perks like free food, prizes, or a take-home gift, and can range from social events to RSO meetings.

In order to view what events are coming up, you can download the mobile app “Corq” for iOS and Android. Select SVSU as your university and sign in using your SVSU credentials, and then you can browse events and organizations you may be interested in. Or you can visit svsu.campuslabs.com/engage/events.
