SVSU LGBTQ+ Programs and Services

LGBTQ+ Programs and Services Office

In November of 2021, what was formerly known as the Pride Center at SVSU became rebranded as LGBTQ+ Programs and Services. LGBTQ+ Programs and Services at SVSU is housed within the Multicultural Student Center in SC111. LGBTQ+ Programs and Services is routinely operated by a Master of Social Work student at SVSU each year.

LGBTQ+ Programs and Services historically hosts a support group for LGBTQ+ students and allies to gather in a safe space, known as OUT Group. OUT group is for students at any stage of the coming out process to engage in making friendships and campus connections while also learning more about LGBTQ+ identities.

During the Fall 2021 semester, the first Pride month on campus, recognized as OUT-tober, was curated by LGBTQ+ Program and Services. OUT-tober served to allow LGBTQ+ SVSU students and staff to celebrate Pride on campus during the primary academic year. Six programs were created as part of the first OUT-tober calendar of events in collaboration with four Registered Student Organizations on campus resulting in over 300 students served throughout the month.

LGBTQ+ Programs and Services offers the Safe Zone workshop for students, staff, and faculty to request at any time. The workshop educates participants on LGBTQ+ terminology, pronoun etiquette, cis- privilege, and challenges biases to create awareness and spread acceptance of the LGBTQ+ community. The Safe Zone workshop typically takes 2-3 hours but can adapt to fit any size group or address specific concerns or questions an individual, organization, or office may have.
