Master of Arts in Teaching: Early Childhood Classroom Teaching Frequently Asked Questions

Through this program, participants earn teacher certification for Birth-Kindergarten (General and Special Education) which prepares teachers for Kindergarten, state and federally-funded preschool, Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE), and Infant-Toddler early intervention. Additionally, participants may choose to complete a Master’s degree in Early Childhood by adding one elective and a capstone course.

The program is sequenced to be completed over 2 years to earn the Master’s degree and/or the Birth-Kindergarten teacher certification.

All classes are held online in either a synchronous or asynchronous session. The practicum (student teaching) requires a placement in an approved publicly-funded program. Many candidates are able to use their own classroom.

Yes! SVSU is an approved institution for the MiAEYC TEACH grant for graduate students. The State of Michigan is offering financial assistance for candidates who are earning their first certification through Mi Future Educator fellowship ($10,000) and stipend ($9600).  Additionally, SVSU is proud to offer the Sally Edgerton-Netke Memorial Scholarship that awards $2500 annually.
