Report Sexual Misconduct

Title IX Reporting to the University

SVSU urges anyone who becomes aware of an incident of sexual or gender-based misconduct or harassment to report the incident immediately by contacting the University’s Title IX Coordinator by phone, email, or in person. The Title IX Coordinator is responsible for investigating misconduct reports (including sexual harassment, sexual assault, stalking, domestic or dating violence). Reports can also be made through the University's online reporting form. There is no time limit for reporting to the university; however, the university’s ability to respond may diminish over time, as evidence may erode, memories may fade, and respondents may no longer be affiliated with the university. If the respondent is no longer a student or an employee, the university will provide reasonably appropriate remedial measures, assist the complainant in identifying external reporting options, and take reasonable steps to eliminate prohibited conduct, prevent its recurrence, and remedy its effects. The university will not pursue disciplinary action against complainants or witnesses for disclosure of illegal personal consumption of drugs or alcohol as such disclosures are made in connection with a good faith report or investigation of prohibited conduct. Complainants may simultaneously pursue criminal and university complaints.

University Employees

Under Title IX, ALL University employees are considered “responsible employees” and are required to report incidents of sexual harassment and misconduct to the Title IX Coordinator or the Office of Human Resources.  These incidents may be the result of observation or information provided to them.

Reporting to Law Enforcement

Complainants have the right to notify or decline to notify law enforcement. In keeping with its commitment to taking all appropriate steps to eliminate, prevent, and remedy all sexual misconduct, the university urges complainants to report sexual misconduct immediately to local law enforcement. Police have unique legal authority, including the power to seek and execute search warrants, collect forensic evidence and make arrests. If you choose, the earlier your report these crimes to the police, the easier it will be for the police to investigate the crime and to prosecute the case. Earlier reporting helps to preserve your options for the future. The university will assist complainants in notifying law enforcement if they choose to do so.

The following law enforcement offices provide support and guidance in filing reports concerning sexual misconduct and other related issues.
