Mural Contest

In preparation for the 2023 Roethke Poetry and Arts Festival, we partnered with Saginaw Transit Authority Regional Services (STARS) to hold a mural contest. Rather than create a traditional mural on the side of a building, we wanted to make Roethke, his poetry, and images linked to his work available throughout the community; we achieved this by placing the mural on a STARS bus—the first mobile mural in Saginaw.  

Artists interested in the contest provided visual responses to a series of quotes from Roethke’s poetry. The winning artist was Pauly M. Everett of Flint, Michigan.  

The project was supported by the Michigan Humanities Council.
