Foundation Scholars is a competitive program that selects 60 incoming freshman students a year.

The Foundation Scholars Program is designed to create a close-knit community of highly talented individuals who are looking for an opportunity to enrich their college experience with both social and academic interactions combined.   During the program, students will elect to complete a study abroad experience or a civic engagement/service learning project. 

As a Foundation Scholar, you will experience:

  • Two specially designated Foundation Scholars courses taken during your first year as part of the general education curriculum
  • An all-expenses paid off-campus retreat in August before classes begin
  • Special lectures and cultural events with all admissions fees paid for by the program
  • An opportunity to meet with upper-classmen mentors in the Foundation Scholars program during group dinners and other casual entertainment events throughout the year
  • Living in a community of like-minded students focused on social engagement and leadership opportunities

Additionally, the Foundation Scholars Program offers:

  • Priority registration (advanced class standing registration) your first two years
  • A stipend up to $1,500 to be applied towards either a study abroad experience or a civic engagement/service learning project
  • An assigned academic advisor (Janna Kern) to assist you with your progress toward graduation

Application criteria:

  • Graduating high school senior
    • Minimum 3.50 cumulative high school GPA & a minimum 24 ACT composite score
    • Demonstrated leadership and service in your school and/or community
    • Be admitted to the university

To apply for the Foundation Scholars Program:

  • Submit your application for admission to the University to the SVSU Office of Admissions
  • Once admitted to the university, qualified students will automatically be sent an invitation to apply for the Foundation Scholars Program
  • Selection is competitive
