Thank you to everyone who attended Welcome Back events yesterday. I would also like to thank our Dining Services and grounds staff for providing both great food and a great atmosphere for employees and their families to enjoy. They do a fantastic job preparing for this event each year, as does our SVSU marching band, directed by Dr. Norm Wika. We certainly appreciate the spirited entrance to a fun event!
If you were not able to attend the Welcome Back remarks, a video of those remarks will be shared with you in the coming days. For now, here are a couple of recent highlights you might have missed.
Freshmen move-in was, as usual, very successful. All of our students are settling back home to campus and will be gearing up for the start of a new semester on Monday. I would like to thank all students, faculty and staff volunteers who spent time moving in students. Your helpfulness and welcoming attitude goes a long way! I would also like to thank Dawn Iseler and the entire housing staff for their outstanding work ensuring that move-in goes smoothly each and every year. No one moves in students like we do, and I am very proud of the collective effort that goes into making what is often a stressful day easier for everyone!
With a number of new Cardinals on campus this coming week, I encourage you to be aware of students or colleagues working to find their way. Offer directions and be open to answering questions. The first week of class can be a nerve-wracking experience; your friendliness and support is appreciated!
You might have seen that Midland Police Chief Cliff Block recently assumed the role of Chief of Police here at Saginaw Valley. Cliff served with the City of Midland for 26 years, starting as a patrol officer in 1993. He was promoted to Chief of Police in 2012. We look forward to welcoming Cliff to his new role here on campus on Sept. 12. I have every confidence that he will be a great addition to our police and university staff.
The Career Services office will host a number of job fairs this fall, starting with the part-time job fair next Tuesday, Aug. 27. More than 60 employers are registered for the event, which will be hosted at 11 a.m. in the Courtyard and will feature food trucks from the Bavarian Inn. More information on this job fair and others can be found at https://www.svsu.edu/careerservices/events/employmentfairs/
Fall Athletics will kick off in just a couple of weeks. You can keep up with Cardinal updates and Athletics schedules at svsucardinals.com, and of course I will share noteworthy updates on our teams with you here throughout the semester. I look forward to a great fall season for all of our Athletics teams.
Communication across campus is important, and I look forward to sharing this update with the Cardinal community on a regular basis. We want to make sure that we are sharing news from across the university. You can help us achieve this by contacting my office and sharing your upcoming events, recent accomplishments and student highlights at WeeklyUpdate@svsu.edu. We look forward to hearing from you!
I wish you all a restful weekend and an excellent first week of the Fall 2019 semester.
